I first answered 2-5 and then after reading some posts got to thinking about it. It's at least 10 grand. I will also agree that some get shot and some just sit. Some are just handier than others.

As far as the thread that spured this one, I have a couple guns that are only worth $300 together but to me they have no dollar value....you couldn't give me enough to part with them. Sometimes sentimental value warrents spending 5 grand on a safe to protect 300 dollar guns:)

I would have to disagree on the Hunters are'nt gun hoarders I know a lot of hunters around these parts that I would say very few of them have less than 5k invested in guns mostly 8k-15k

I track my spending and it isn't an exact science, but this thread spurred me to do a quick analysis of my gun-related spending in calendar year 2011 (I am all but done for the year). I am kind of surprised at the results (numbers are rounded and there was a small amount that missed categorization, so it might not add up perfectly):

-17% went to guns themselves.
-12% in match fees
-11% in travel
-23% in ammo (components)
-35% in what can only be categorized as "misc" parts, accessories, gear, and other odds and ends... random orders from Midway, Brownells, etc. The single biggest item categorized as misc was my Dillon 650.

I didn't account for any gas, which would add somewhat significantly to the total travel expenses, but I would have guessed that match fees + travel would have accounted for a LOT more than 23% overall. I also would have thought "misc" would be a lot smaller.

I bought fewer guns, but did more shooting and shot more matches than ever before this year, so I knew this kind of balance would be in play vs past years where I have spent more on guns themselves and less on actually shooting.

An acquaintence has probably $100,000 +, in 2 large safes. None are especially collectables, and all are shooters, but he can't shoot for squat. Loves to show off but can't hit what he shoots at. The corps didn't teach him well. But gee I get to shoot some nice guns when I visit.

A couple registered and a few custom ones and I already hit the ++ category. Then there are the other safes full.:D I will say that what's in the safes and reloading room are worth way more than the house, garage, and automobiles combined.
