The Very Bad Gun Ideas Thread

I don’t think anyone has exceeded the shear amazing badness of the ideas in the first post. But here are my attempts at a doe with an eye patch:

a. Folding stock lever action.

b. Bolt action handgun, for greater long rang accuracy.

c. Suppressed revolver (OK I know there is a Russian revolver that can be suppressed, because the cylinder moves forward and seal against the back of the barrel. I’m talking about threading a normal revolver barrel and screwing on a suppressor.)

Bolt action handgun, for greater long range accuracy.
Here are the ones Sandy and I used to compete with back in the early 1980s. The one on the left is a Wichita Arms Silhouette pistol, the right one is a Remington XP-100. Both are in 7mm IHMSA, essentially a necked down and improved .300 Savage.

The .22-50 BMG...

Is probably the classic example of 'overbore' capacity. That's not a scientific term, but it's real nonetheless; the cartridge has more powder capacity than it can realisticly use.

My thought was to use a very slow powder - finely ground coal dust comes to mind - as a propellent and a long barrel.

However, due to the burning rate of smokeless powder, no conventional firearm can exceed a specific velocity (around 5500 - 6000 f/s if my memory serves correctly.) In the same manner, black powder guns top out at about 1800 f/s or so.

Changing the subject, revolvers can be and have been supressed. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the cylinder-barrel junction just doesn't make that much noise.

For 'bad ideas', the Chauchet is certainly high on the list. But then, so are the Italian Carcanos, the Japanese medium machinegun with the ammo trays, the Glisenti autopistol and the Jo-Lo-Ar pistol. Then again, I'm not crazy about the Colt 2000 pistol (neither was anyone else).

^ Yes the cylinder gap does render a silencer useless. There are silenced revolvers though. They have up to 12 lb trigger pulls in SA! Since the gun has to press the cylinder forward and cock & release the hammer with each pull.

T.A.R.D. Part 2

Rugerdude,

OMG!!!!:barf:
When you get into the second phase of isusing the new and improved T.A.R.D. You can call it the R.E.T.A.R.D.

Try using formica next time and save a tree from a horrible fate.

Many of these bad ideas have already been tried.

- There is a gun shop in Longview, Texas that has a .50 BMG necked down to .17 HMR. They are looking for a gun to shoot it.

- The Germans did have a rifle with a curved barrel that shot around corners during WWII.

Other bad ideas-
- Bulletless ammo. It was tried back in the early 90s. I am not talking about blanks. I am talking about the front shell casing being launched at the target by the one behind it in a chamber. The action unlocks the front casing, it is released and the next one advances into battery. Sounds crazy... because well it was a very bad idea.

- Anything that you have to do to AR to make it legal in California.

Some I came up with on my own:
Bad AR ideas...
- 1000 round AR-15 Magazine. For when 30 rounds just won't get 'er done.

- A red light laser mounted on your CQB AR with red dot scope. Just line 'em up and you are good to go.

Cool looking in Predator, but what if you build one in a caliber small enough to carry and fire?

Thats the one from T2JD, Not Predator:D

The one from Predator had an M60 handguard instead of the 'Chainsaw' handle.

And why pray tell is that?

JFK wasn't a fan of this one......

I think that most of the responses have missed the irony contained in the OP.

Not difficult to do, since most of it was very subtle.

As far as:

2) Muzzle loader with fixed bayonet, to reduce the number of parts and increase the speed with which the bayonet may be brought to bear.

Some military forces tried this, and were issuing pikes to NCOs well into the 19th Century.

I wanted a mouse gun with sights good enough to hunt mice with so that the nickname of the gun could be matched with a function, so...

I put a 5x .22 scope on my 1 1/8" NAA Mini revolver by cutting a groove on each side of the top strap of the frame, thereby creating a 3/8" rail. The scope idea didn't work out so well and so I found a 3/8" to weaver conversion rail that I mounted there and then tried a 40 mm Red Dot optic. That didn't work out too well either because the dot was too far above the bore. So then I pulled the Red Dot and simply mounted a laser sight on top. This was the best form/function fit of the three alternative sighting options, but it basically doubled the height of the gun at the cylinder and printed significantly in my pocket (as an unrecognizable lumpy object).

With the laser sight and in low light, I could hit much better at distance (15 yards) that I rarely hit with the original crude sights of the gun, even managing a couple of hits at 35 yards (out of 10 shots). The NAA Mini revolver in .22 lr is not really meant for long range shooting, so that facet was useless. Then I discovered the laser scared the mice and so while I could aim much better at a few feet, the mice would scurry away before I could get off a decent shot.

...and it started off as such a good idea, too!

Holy cow... Aaryq, you have just become the king of anti-zombie weaponry. Lmao
