This week on Gun Broker there was a used Pietta Remington .44. steel framed, with almost four full boxes of Hornady round balls. The gentleman wanted $255 for it all plus $25 shipping. I offered him $200 for it all plus actual Priority Mail shipping charges and he declined as he said he paid far more for the gun. Explaining to him the gun can be bought new for $200 and the balls for $10/box, that his gun was worth approx. $150-$160 since he had fired it. He didn't like hearing that so I waited til he had two days left on his auction (with no bids) and contacted him again, offering him $220 including shipping. He declined again but said he would take $230 plus $25 shipping even though I had explained to him about Priority Flat Rate mail. I declined and went over to Cabelas website and purchased a new Pietta Remington .44, steel framed, target model for $220!
No tax and $18 shipping.
I think the gentleman is going to be keeping his Remington for a long time!
I see this over and over again on the auction sites...those folks really need a reality check!!!

The deals are out there... I found this in a pawn shop (with spare cylinder) for $125.00. It wasn't purdy... until I got it home and started cleaning/polishing... it looks nearly new and the action feels nice and smooth too. It's a Pietta in .44.

I've bought several guns on both auction arms and gunbroker. There are some deals to be had but there are also a lot of folks listing items in hope there is a sucker that wants it.

Very nice find! I know the deals are out there...I picked up an 1860 Army Colt by Pietta...brand new in the box, for just under $160, a few weeks ago. What I don't understand is, why these folks seem to think their BP revolvers are made out of gold or that they appreciate in value...or that they even hold their value once they've been shot!

p.s. like the bow too...is that hickory/walnut or osage orange/walnut and what poundage?

Good find !! Now, post up pix of the '60 too. I think some of 'em are of the opinion that since gun sales/prices have soared... by default, BP gear should/is too. It's crazy. I had another gun store tell me he wanted almost $400 for a well used Hawken. A couple of weeks later... found a .54 Renegade for $125.00 and a Hawken "kit" (a bit rough when put together) for $125.00. Again... the UGLY Renegade blossomed into a NICE lookin' rifle with some TLC. The Hawken kit? Well... it's got potential, but will require a bit "more" TLC to shine. I'm happy. I 'specially like not needing a spotting scope to see the hits at 50yds... the Renegade's a keeper after it's first time out.

Thanks... I'd just finished making that longbow from a stave of Osage Orange, backed with Bamboo, and a little Bocote for the riser. It tillered in at the targeted 65# @ 28" and after warming up the limbs... chrono'd in at roughly 180fps. The design is "American Flat Bow". I twisted up a three color Flemish twist string of B50 dacron for it. It also got a hair shelf and leather plate above the shelf. The finish is hand-rubbed Tru-Oil.

Very nice wood on the Renegade and I really like the steel trigger guard...much better than I do brass.
The bow is beautiful...65# is out of my league. I have a couple of takedown recurves...PSE's (Ragim-Italy)..my fav is the Sable at 50# and at this point I need to work back up to it with a lighter bow if I don't want to tear out my shoulder. I have considered making my own over the years but I guess I just keep getting lazier with each passing year!!!
I thought I did post a pic of the 1860...if not, I will, when the Remington comes in next week and will take pics of all four (revolvers) that I have/will have...Spiller & Burr..Colt 1860 Army..1858 Remington New Army .36 cal. Police Model and the 1858 Remington New army .44 caliber Target Model.

There is always someone who will overpay for something on the auction sites either because they are new at it, or just don't do any shopping around before buying. The result of this is that the next five guys who want to sell a similar item check out the items that have already been sold before they sell theirs to see what the market is and then list it for what the last guy got. They might get lucky and find another sucker, or after four or five relistings they will drop the price down to something more realistic. Gunbroker does not charge you to list an item, they charge you when it sells only, so it costs a seller nothing but time to list items. I would have taken the $200 offer, fair for a used revolver of this type. You just have to shop around, and take your time.

I thought it was fair...I never try to get something for nothing and explained the situation to the guy twice. Unfortunalty, for him, it appears he's going to learn the hard way.

Well, after reading this I decided to check GB and see how bad the latest insanity had gotten. I did find a number of revolvers selling at unrealistic prices as I expected, but then I spotted a recently produced Pietta '60 Army new in the box selling for well under two hundred with shipping and a soft case. I had been wanting to pick up another '60 Army as it's the revolver I shoot with the most so I jumped on that, thanks Bluehawk, if reading this post hadn't put the thought in my mind I might have missed a nice revolver. Just luck, the last 30 times I have looked I found nothing priced to entice me to look at it.

I haven't shot a bow since last fall... and wouldn't be able to shoot this one at present. Yup... gettin' older and shoulders ain't what they used to be. Got others to work with as I regain my strength for those muscles. Tell ya what... makin' a longbow is a lot of fun, especially when you can do so with a buddy. Hope you decide to do so.

RatDog, what did you use on the grips, looks very nice. Hell of a buy at $125.
Yer MCBness... all I did with those grips was to rub a little Flitz metal polish on 'em to renew the luster. They didn't need anything else. BTW... Flitz is da bomb on shinin' up blued steel too... you'd be surprised at the "brown" that lifts off from the salts used in the blueing process.

Rock was that a buy it now deal? take some pics and show us what ya got!!!!!!

Pricing is like when its your car or truck for sale it's not worth half the black book value, but then the car lot has one just like it for twice the amount. A local pawn/gun shop has one of the Traditon's blister pack 1858 for a sale price of $329.00 + tax. When I see this I just walked right on by.

As much as we all don't like Evilbays gun policies they have one thing that I think the gun auction sites should implement. That is a listing fee. I feel that the listing fee forces sellers to be more realistic in their pricing. When I was selling on Ebay my bill was $300.-500. a month. No one can afford to pay listing fees week after week with out selling the item, at some point even if it did sell the seller wouldn't make any money. I think I know why the gun auction sites haven't any listing fees because they can get more listings and appear bigger than their actual sales traffic. On the other side I think Ebay should implement the 15 min rule. This would eliminate sniping.

I for one like having no listing fees. Sometimes an item won't get picked up even if the price is right, just because it isn't being sought after that moment.

I had to send the man payment and I expect it to be a week or so before I see the revolver and have time to shoot the pics, but I will post one when I can. It was a buy it now, and I bought it right away. I had been toying with the idea of picking up another '60 Army one day but the current prices had been high enough to put me off the idea. I just happened to see this one at a time when I had some extra cash and the price was right for a change. I have a Uberti '60 as well as many other Pietta, and Uberti revolvers of various types so I know what to expect. This is a more recent vintage Pietta, so I expect less of the quality controll issues I found on a few of the ones I had years back. All of their more recent revolvers have been pretty good.

there is no such thing as sniping, some one else just wanted a bargin the same as you or me, just enter a proxy bid as high as you want to pay . i have lost many items, living by my bid only what i want to pay rule.but i have also gotten items at what i wanted to pay. eastbank.
