Think I have found my Future Hunting Rifle

Like the title says, I think I have found My Future Hunting Rifle.
Don't think I'll be able to get it untill I move, so I'd like to find out as much first hand info as possable about it.

It's one of the Browning BAR High-Grade Sires (not to sure which cal to get yet).

So, can anyone provide any additional info on it and possably any sugguestions on which cal to go for?
(kinda partal to the 7mm & the 300 mag)
 
Well, to tell the truth I don't Hunt either, Nither have I ever been hunting, but I plan to once I move back to the US.
I could try and get the Rifle here, but there's the snag of getting a rifle licanse.
I'm only making a guestamate, but it could take around 3 years just to get a rifle licanse here, and I plan to be back stateside long before then.:)
 
What are you planning on hunting? Depending on your answer to that question, your caliber needs could be different. If you're going after deer, then I would look at the 270 or 7mm. Both are good deer calibers and don't kick the bejeezus out of you when you fire them. Just my .02 cents.

Well, I'm not a big fan of guns with pictures on them, but I'd still look at the 270 or the 7mm. For deer or elk, they;ll work fine. The 300 is a shoulder whacker IMHO, and isn't very comfortable to shoot.
 
Brother Zed, you've got good taste in rifles.
I have a Mk II Safari w/BOSS+CR in 7mm Rem.Mag.
It is SHWEET... :)

Since what you're looking at is a straight-up rifle with no iron sights or BOSS to mess with, I'm wondering if you'd consider a NIKON 6X or Leupold 6X scope for it?
Nice scopes. Fixed power. No fuss, no muss, just like the gun.

Is this your only rifle for hunting?
I was looking at the prices...the 7mm is about $300 less than the .300!
If you don't NEED the .300, the 7mm is real nice in a gas-gun! Especially for the price differences for the rifle and ammo.

I like your choice. A LOT. :D

In the FWIW department, I got one-shot kills at 350 and at 450 yards with 150-grain bullets from an '06. I don't feel the need for more power...

There's nothing wrong with the 7 Maggie or the .300, of course. I just don't feel they're really necessary for the majority of hunting needs.

What like are average the prices of Ammo for 270, 7mm & 300 per 100rd box...?

Whatever I end up getting in the end I'll be putting in a lot of time & rounds at the range's since I have 7 years of non-shooting rust to get rid of so I'd assume bulk buying would be the most wallet friendly.:)

& BusMaster007, I was also thinking something like a Nikkon 6x would be perfect, but I still want the option of using sights as well though.

I like to test my all out unaided accuracy a lot, vertualy anyone can hit something a scope's crosshairs are pinned on, but using standard sights takes skill...:)

Aye, there's the rub: The pinning.

I once offered a deal to an anti-hunter who moaned of the trivial ease of a scoped rifle: I'd mount a camera on a gunstock, with crosshairs affixed to the focal plane. All he had to do to collect $1,000 was bring me a photo of the crosshairs in the right place for a hit on a running buck. If he failed more than three "shots", he owed me $500. He rethought his argument. :D

Well, of course. However this is more easily said by those under forty years of age, who are fortunate enough to not need bifocals or trifocals. I miss those days when I could see both the front and rear sights on my rifle--and the target, too!

Very good Point, I was thinking of Stationary targets though and forgot to mention wich....:rolleyes:

And Thankfully I am only 24 have 20-20 Vision!:D

which makes me wonder if my Dad can still shoot without a Scope, he wears bifocals nowdays, but can still see not to bad without them...

He used to have a Mauser 7.62 as his main gun way back Before I came to be...shame he got rid of it, would probably be worth a good bit nowdays...
 
Not meaning to hijack the thread, but those of you that have a BAR, just how accurate are they? 100, 200, 300 yard groups? I have always wanted a BAR, but have never heard about its accuracy.
 
My BAR is as accurate as any of my bolt-action centerfire rifles, if not more so, if I play with the BOSS (CR with no holes/brake is always on it).

The fancy version of the BAR has NO sights, so, if you want back-up iron sights (BUIS) you'll need to look at the other versions of the BAR.
That will save you some money, too.
Especially the Stalker version with open sights.
Nice, all black rifle. My favorite!

I went back and looked at the original link and branched off to the Lightweight wood/blue versions with sights.
Another consideration is to scope a BOSS Stalker and carry a pre-zeroed cheap scope to back up the main scope. Just an idea.

The BAR is a great platform.
 
The Browning Int'l site shows a BAR with BOSS & open sights...

The only way I see to get that here is $$$ ! :D
Some enterprising gunsmith could probably hook you up. Or you could import the BAR with both.
I had posted a photo here once before showing that BAR. I'll try it again.
I'm going to 'cut & paste' my message here in case it disappears, as has happened recently...

(I'm planning on getting the Browning A-Bolt II in .375 H&H and it has both, but I think it's the only one of the Browning rifles available in the USA that does.)
