Like the title says, I am thinking real hard about getting a Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail tomorrow. Although the 10mm would be a hoot, and is extremely tempting, I think I will get the .45 ACP version.

It'll be for carry primarily.

I do have a few questions that maybe some of you could clear up for me if you don't mind...

The night sights- I know they are Champions with Trijicon inserts, but are the standard sights the ones with the green front and yellow rear? Do they come adjusted already or do I need to adjust and loc-tite them upon getting the pistol?

The hammer- I know some have been prone to breakage, but how do I spot one of these out of the box? Are the breakage prone ones blue or stainless?

The barrel bushing- Are these blued or stainless now? If they are blue I might order a stainless Ed Brown one to match the rest of the gun.

TIA to anyone who takes their time to help me out here. No stores around here have any Dan Wessons to look at first hand, so I am shooting in the dark here and buying based on the company's reputation and the quality of the parts they use. I usually never buy anything sight unseen, so any help here is much appreciated.

The night sights on mine (2006 production, I think) are green front and back, and came already fixed on the pistol.

Not sure on the hammer issue -- hadn't heard that, haven't had any problem with mine. Also not sure what kind of bushing they're using now but mine is blued.

Mine's about as old as HorseSoldier's and has the blue bushing and the green front and back night sights. The newer ones have a stainless bushing and a new hammer that has had a few reported breakages. The newer CBOBs also have an undercut trigger guard (I wish mine had this as well) and deeper/darker laser engravings. Lots of great info here http://forums.1911forum.com/ in the Dan Wesson forum.

Mine's pretty new, has stainless bushing, black hammer, yellow/green trijicons, finer frontstrap checkering and slightly undercut trigger guard. I believe these are the current production.

Yep. You nailed it. I've been asking around, and this is what I've come up with as well.

Also the hammer issue apparently has been blown out of proportion on the internet (I know, who'd have thunk it?), as it seems to have been only a few hammers that actually broke. In every case DW more than took care of it.

So I put the order in with Bud's today. I specified in the "dealer notes" section that I wanted an '08 production gun with the 25 LPI front strap and the yellow/green night sights.

I'll post pics and a thorough range report when it gets in my possession.

You're going to get the DW CBOB you want. I ordered one from Buds they day they dropped the price to $869(the 18th, I believe). I'd been watching it for quite a while. It is phenomenal and you won't be disappointed. I had no idea it was going to be yellow rears but it's actually kind of nice. I'm extremely pleased with mine and it shot like a dream this morning.

Cool  . That's what I was hoping for. I figured with as much business as Bud's has that they wouldn't have any old stock laying around but you never know. There's an '04 date code USP at the Academy across town...

I ordered mine a few days ago. It should be in next week. I wonder which features it will have. I did not order from Buds, nor was I fortunate enough to pay $869:cuss:.
