45-70 Govt!
I figure a Marlin guide gun and Magnum Research 7.5" revolver.
Solves the problem of underpowered carbine rounds, and brings a bigger wallop than the 30-30.
Interested in y'all's thoughts!

What do you plan on doing with them?

My 1895G is one of my favorite rifles. It's quick to point, feels very natural, is built like a tank and is just a great hog hammer... BUT, they are certainly not for everyone. I certainly wouldn't suggest it for a day at the range. If you are looking to take medium to big game in relatively close quarters, it's the best thing going. Outside of that..

As for the .45-70 BFR... :(

I have a friend that has one. Never had much inclination to fire it ever again after the first time. If you shoot anything above the reduced trapdoor loads in it you are in for an experience. If you shoot some of the hotter loads the 1895G can handle... well, good knowing you.

I use a .45 Colt Blackhawk with hot loads as a backup when hunting with the 1895G

What's underpowered about .44 and .45 carbines? Hardcast bullets will shoot through both sides of anything in NA.

I know the newer 45-70 ammo is stout, but I figure there's gotta be an upside to being a XXL...

So which 45 is good for anything on the continent?

My thoughts? 4.3 lb pistol, plus a 7.5lb rifle? Unloaded. Could be fun at the range if that's what your looking for. Practicality? Not there for me. But if you go that direction have fun.

Never shot a BFR 45-70 but have done a lot of reserch on it and it seems to be a not so bad shooter, even in 7.5" witch most seem to like.
It would be a nice addition to my Marlin 45-70.

I guess my fundamental argument would be based around this notion...

".... underpowered carbine rounds..."

Huh?

Todd.

Sorry, just had to :)

Friend of a friend loves to hunt deer with a TC Encore in 500 S&W. I found it pretty tame with the long barrel and big scope. I could see myself going .45-70 easy. Question would be Encore or G2 Contender?

"...ltimate..." doesn't mean the same thing to everyone, mi amigo. I'm thinking a 4 inch S&W Model 686 and an H&R Topper 16 inch or a Marlin 1894C carbine in .357 Magnum would be my "ultimate" combo if, by combo, you mean a pistol & carbine that use the same ammo. In this case, it's .35 Special OR .357 Magnum.

For me it is the Noveske Rogue Hunter 5.56 and a Para Ordinance P-14 .45 so there certainly is different strokes for different folks.
Hunting in North country, say Alaska or Montana, I 'll take my 30-06 Mannlicher Schoenaer Carbine (or a .375 H&H rifle) and my Ruger Bisley .454 conversion or an S&W .44mag with heavy bullets .
