What kind of performance you can get out of a 500 S&W carbine??

Do you think it woudl equal the modern strong loads for 45-70??

Irt would be interesting to see Marlin making one lever action chambered for the revolver monster cartridge....

After the 44-40 WCF Colt 1873-Winchester 1873 combo of the late 19th century and the 44 Magnum S&W 29-Marlin 1895 combo of the 50's, it's just about time to see a thrid interaction of this frontier classic...in Alaska it would go very well I bet!!!

Never gonna happen, 500mag pushes 300wm pressures and is way beyond what any marlin platform can handle.

Recoil from a 500 carbine is also quite severe when shooting full powered loadings. Typically my handi rifle would only average a 100 to 200fps improvement over published velocities for a handgun.

Now 460S&W on the other hand is a completely different beast when shot from a carbine posting massive gains in velocity vs a handgun. BUT if anything recoil is even worse. My TC kadhin carbine actually sheared off a scope ring

Possibly you could do a bit better if you used sloooooooow burning powder...but reloading costs (much less factory loads) would not be cheap. :)

Out of my 500 Handi-Rifle I'm getting 2,173fps from a 350gr lead gas check bullet.
That's 1,000 more foot pounds of energy than a 30-06.

I had been shooting it a while and was astonished when I chrono'd it.

My shooting buddies get mad at me when I leave it at home.:) They bring junk iron out and like to see it destroyed.

No it's not...that just a hair above 3600 ft/lb which is no more than 3-400 ft/lb more than a stout SAAMI compliant 30-06 load...

Some nuclear 45-70 loads can crank out close to 4000 ft/lb...

+1

My Marlin .45-70 loads are a 405 grainer atop 60 grains of H335 for 2,015 FPS and 3,650 ft/lbs. You can do a compressed load just a bit hotter for bolt actions and Ruger #1's.

Top .30-06 loads will hit the 3,200-3,300 FPE mark.

Ok, you win:), but it was 1,000 more foot pounds than the chart I was looking at anyway.

You'd think somebody would say , "that's pretty good for a pistol cartridge though."

It still makes a bigger hole.:neener:

Is anyone besides H&R making a carbine for the 500 S&W? I've not looked at the ballistics for the 500, but it seems like any platform hardy enough for the hottest 444s and 45/70 loads could handle the 500, but I may be mistaken.

Thompson Center has a short Encore barrel chambered for the 500. I've got one. Shooting a 350 gn JHP Sierra bullet pushed by 42gn of H110 it flies at 1850 fps give or take a little from shot to shot. I'm sure I could get more with a faster powder since there's a HUGE fireball at the muzzle with the H110. It sure punches at the shoulder though. A really good pad is a must. I'm sort of looking around to get one of the TC shock absorbing stocks soon if I can find one for cheap.
