Thinking about a new Sunby 357 vs 44 spl

I am thinking about summer here in sunny South Florida and can't really carry my hand howitzer so I am thinking of getting a 1 7/8" J-frame type revolver. I wanted to know which would give the better protection.

357 magnum

or

44 spl

WHich one would you think would perform better in a J-frame type package?

Well, you cant get a .44 in a J frame.
However... Between the 2 the .44 is much more pleasurable to shoot, and with good ammo VERY effective.
I carry a Taurus 445 .44 special 5 shooter as my pocket gun.

You are looking at a Charters Arms revolver if you want a small frame .44.

S&W did make a .44 on their medium L frame, the 696 and an airweight model, the 296, but both are discontinued.

In .357 magnum you have a plethora of choices from S&W & Taurus (I'd go S&W).

If you want a gun that can be conveniently pocket carried, the difference in size between a J-frame (i.e. an S&W .38/.357) and any available .44 special will prove significant.

I would go with the 357. Cheaper to shoot and practice which makes your more competent. Especially if you use 38's. I have a 44 magnum in a Taurus with a 8" barrel and a burris scope and it is not for the faint at hard. Got it as a gift from my brother. Used it a couple of times to take a doe down at 95 yards. Go 357 more than enough for self defense.

Try this next time you are in the ammo aisle. Take a look at any .357 hollowpoint round and compare it to the CCI blazer .44 special 200 grain gold dot rounds. I felt that there was no comparison when I did that. You also get 50 of them in a box.

I would go with the .357 magnum....

because you have a very large variety of ammo that could be used, not to mention 38 special as well. Also, the 357 magnum hot loads impart far more ft/lbs of energy than a 44 special.
