Thinking about buying a Kimber Pro Covert..opinions wanted.

I think Kimber as a whole makes the best looking 1911's on the market. That said, I have only actually spent any time with one, and it was a small carry model. It ran 100%. I really liked the gun, but remember thinking at the time that it didn't seem like a $500+ better gun than my polymer M&P. That's not to say it wasn't a great gun, but it didn't change my perception of handguns the way people hype the 1911.

I still want a 1911, but haven't been able to justify it yet. FWIW, at a very well respected shop here in our area, I did some checking on all the major 1911's, from RIA all the way to Wilson Combat. I stopped at the Dan Wesson and Kimber Eclipse. The Kimber was just beautiful, but the entire shop was unanimous in it's opinion that the Dan Wesson is the much better gun. Given the choice, I would take the DW.

Now, if only DW would match Kimber's sense of style......

GoodKat-

That CCO is pretty sweet! I never even knew it existed. I don't think this next purchase will be a dedicated CCW, so I'm leaning towards a full-size frame that will accept 8-round magazines. To me, the weight savings of an aluminum frame is more important for CCW than a shorter officers frame. That's why I was leaning towards the Pro Covert. It kind of has a little bit of everything I want for an "all-around" 1911, plus the cool factor. If I was looking for a dedicated concealed carry 1911, I'd consider that DW CCO, a Kimber Compact CDP, or something else with an aluminum officers frame. If I had $3000 to blow on the ultimate CCW, it would be a Wilson Combat Sentinel Compact in the lightweight aluminum frame version.

Right now, I'm still liking the Pro Covert, but a CBOB w/ a black finish would be a nice alternative.

The barrel weight difference in a 4" "Bull" barrel and a standard bushing and barrel is only a few ounces. The 4" aluminum framed Kimber carries easy. For carry purposes there's a world of difference in a steel framed 4" and an aluminum one. The round count on mine is close to 4k without a malfunction. I should add that the Pro is one of the most accurate 1911s in my safe. The CBOB is a nice pistol as well. I had one for a while in 10mm. No problems with it for the 400 or so rounds I fired thru it.

I'm pretty sure the cco will accept 8 round mags, it'll just stick out a little.
