Thinking about buying a Mosin Nagant

$90 at Fleet Farm up in MN, not sure of the quality.

$85 for 440 rounds of surplus ammo

What's not to like? I love shooting my Mosin; with a recoil pad it is very comfortable and I must have gotten a good one with smooth action because the bolt never gets stuck on me. But yes, look through them and pick a good one. Some actions are smoother than others, and some have nicer stocks than others.

I paid $110 for mine. It's been refurbished counterbored and recrowned. It is a 1942 Izzy with a laminate stock.
I think there a very fine old weapon that is worth every dime. There also built like a tank. I haven't been able to shoot it long range yet but at short range it seems like the groups are consistant enough for me to think it should be fairly accurate at longer ranges. Now all I need to do is find enough time to go and do that.

$120 isnt bad so long as you have the opportunity to go over it real well before you buy.

I personally don't have a problem with the sights, in fact I am amazed at the accuracy of the elevation adjustment on my Mosin's once the zero is set. It does kick like a mule though and is not smooth in the operation of the bolt but when you consider the time frame in which the rifle was first developed it is not surprising and under the Soviet system anything built by the government was perfect for the need and did not need to be improved which is why the Ural motorcycle shares many similarities with a 1930's BMW motorcycle.

I wish I could find one for that price. Sporting goods stores around here seem limited to shotguns and more likely, just airsoft. The Farm N Fleet stores here don't even sell firearms at all. That last Mosin I saw at a retail store was at the Gander Mountain near me. They wanted $199 for a 91/30. The few that come up on Armslist are almost always $150 or better. Maybe I need to hit a few gun shows. :(

Sights aren't anything to brag about, but once you get used to them there a little better. They do kick like a mule like steel horse rider says. This is the only picture I have at the moment with the rubber recoil pad on it. The stocks finish was terrible on it when I got it but the wood itself looked to be in great shape. It appears like it had oil on it on something before thy refinished it and was flaking off in small chunks.

That is a fine looking laminated stock on yours. One of the local gun stores I frequent recently acquired a shipment of the laminated stock Mosin's so I have had an itch to add another to my harem. They are in the $90 range here complete with the cosmoline.

Deadflies: aimsurplus, classicarms, etc... will ship to WI. They don't hate the packers like I do, and will probably be glad to do business with you.
Roadking: that stock looks in credible. did you do it yourself or order a replacement?
NEVER MIND: you answered while I was typing

That is the original and I did it myself. I kept rubbing the original finish off with lacqer thinner till there was nothing left to remove. Then applied two coats of tung oil then finally finished it all off with clear minwax. There is no other finish on that rifle. I do have about 8hrs time involved in refinishing it.
I'm a retired Carpenter so I like doing that sort of thing.
Here's a little closer look at it.

A local hardware store has them (91/30s) on sale this weekend for $79 bucks. I am getting my first Mosin! I really want to get two so I can practice my gunsmithing (term used loosely) on one and keep another fairly original but I just don't think I can swing it.

I am perhaps unreasonably excited about getting this rifle.

Deadflies, have you tried a Dunham's? I'd imagine they must have at least one in Madison. Check the Sunday flyer in the newspaper (or at the store); they usually have Mosins on sale for under $100 every month or so (or did when I was looking). Get to go through the rack too to pick the best one.

While you're there, make sure to grab some Packer's gear ;-)

mosin

Some of them are tack drivers, others shoot really nice 2 1/2 feet groups. It is hit or miss. You never really know until you take it to their range. Try to find someone who is selling theirs and ask to shoot it first.

I did a little swapping last weekend and ended up with a 1944 M38 with a laminate stock. I fired it at the range 5-6 rounds I think recoil is way over-rated. Was shooting Wolf 147 grain hell I would let my kids shoot it no second thought. Well at least the boys ages 11 and 12.

There is a single mom who brings her two boys to the range alot. Both boys ages 10 and 13 have 91/30's. Both will sit down at the bench and shoot 20-30 rounds each. Never heard one of them whimper a bit.

Yeah, recoil on my M44 is nothing. I routinely put 150-200 rounds through it when I go to the range. People make way too big a deal about it. It's just noisy, not painful.

I have the mosin itch also. Cheap high power ammo! I was just up in a shop that about 8 of them.
I thought they were heavy? I picked them up and was surprised I was expecting them to be a lot heavier, but any way they were $150 which around here in NY that seems to be the going rate up here . If I had the cash I would have grabbed one. They looked a lot better than I was thinking a old rifle would.
Any way when I score one I will post pics and good luck to all the other people looking for one!

Oh yea I got the old cosmoline on my new shirt:eek:

I was sorely tempted by a great condition barrelled hex action for 60$ at the LGS...but then I looked down the bore and noticed...

...

...a curve :barf:

Not mentioned on the sale tag or anything (and not suprising considering the noodle-thin barrel). No wonder I always end up with "mystery hits" on my targets at the range .

I second the local Gun Show, I got my first one from a crate, was even lucky enough to get first dibs on them! Around here Gunshow price is ~90, gun store is about 20-30 more. That being said, my M44 I got at the gun store for what seemed to me a steal at $120.

Fun guns, more is always better, center fire, reasonably accurate (for the most part),
Cheap ammo, and I think the recoil is greatly exaggerated (my first was also my first non rimfire gun I ever shot and I think recoil is way more than manageable).

I have a c&r but I paid $120 for mine at a gun shop. I did this bc they had about 300the of them in boxes in cosmo. I spent 2 hours digging through them to find the one I wanted. The $89 online is still $110 after shipping. It was worth $10it more for me to pick the one I wanted.

Went to a pawn shop here yesterday and they had 5 Mosins for sale. $199 was the CHEAPEST and none of them were in very good condition from an appearance point of view. Of course they try to sell a Savage 110 with scope combo for $479 which is more than a NIB from Wallyworld:) I guess they like to haggle but I prefer a bit more reasonable starting point.

They are quite fun, I have 3...one is a repro sniper and that is quite fun to play with.

If you are going to cut it up at least first check the thing out....it would not be the first time a westinghouse was hiding in the $89 sale stack.
