Let me first say that I am not soliciting here, and am simply weighing my options and gathering info...

With Christmas coming up, I am thinking about letting go of my P89 :(

I know this seems to be hated by many, but ergonomics aside it's a fine gun for the price I paid and reliable. I kind of view it like the Civic of handguns. Mine is in great condition save for some handling wear on the safety, slide stop, etc. Nothing major as it is only a range gun.

I was wondering how much I should expect to get by selling it? I know I won't have anything definite until I take it in to the dealer in question, but I won't have time to do that until the weekend, and I am trying to gather some info for my research in the late evenings. Anyone have a ball-park figure? Thanks in advance...

Are you sure you haven't weighed all your other options? I mean I'm not saying the kids should go without presents for Christmas or anything, but most of the time I've sold a gun, I've been sorry. And I've always sold them to "trade up" to another gun. If I just sold them for cash, I'd have felt worse.

It's nice to have a 9mm range gun. .45ACP gets pricey quick.

BTW, you might get a better response to the value question in the semi-auto pistol section of the forum. I figure it's worth $250-300 depending on what they go for in your area.

I think a dealer will pay you about $150 for the gun you described and try to retail the gun $225-$250. Private sale would probably be in the $200-$225 range. A reliable semi auto from a reputable maker is worth more than that to me regardless of what the market says.

You never know when a friend or loved one may need a firearm and not have cash on hand nor the time to wait for one in some areas. Unless you really, really need a few bucks keep it.

Well, I can certainly understand the misfortune of not hanving enough
cash on hand for the holidays, as well as other emergency's; but as
others have indicated, I would explore all possible options and see if
by chance there is a way too keep the Ruger P89~!:scrutiny: ;)

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

They give money for blood and semen; also have you made sure you dont have any paintings or jewelry that can go first? Silverware? China? Small Pets? Stuff woman like but dont really need :D

I sold guns because I needed money badly right after I got married. What a moron I was to have done so. I am not sayying you are less than intelligent to sell guns when you have the urge to do so to buy another gun or even something else you want badly for your kids> Yet I do feel it is less than wise, in my opinion, to sell guns to get money that you NEED. Find a second job or something, you willl appreciate the fact you did so at a later date, or you will regret the fact you did not get that extra job and sold your gun the rest of your life. Selling them when you need money is really different than selling them or trading them to be able to get other guns or other toys, really it is I swear. Somehow it makes it worse later on when you look back and think to yourself, 'heck I really did not NEED the money bad enough to sell my guns', or 'man I could have gotten it somehow else'. If you need money badly enough, you probably have something else you can sell. Of course, if it the only way to do right by the kids, then do it. I have only one or two regrets about not doing right by my family when I could have donme better but I assure you those memories will haunt me worse and longer than any memory of a sold gun. I guess what I am saying is, if you can do it differently (get money) then try another way first but if not, don't let down your kids if you can help it.

One other thing, don't sell it to a dealer. Sell it to a regular Joe or Jane who will give you a much better price than would a dealer. Check out this site's for sale section or a site like Gunbroker.com. It is not all that complicated to run a one week or 5 day auction. They give a pretty good tutorial about how to do it.

Good luck and Merry Christmas,
GB

I really appreciate all the replies. Yes, I have been pondering this for some time, and have been weighing a lot of my options. My choices are to either let go of one of my guns (logistically it should be the Rem 597 as that this is the worst POS in my collection, but I would probably get 30 bucks for it if a sucker comes along) or simply keep saving past Christmas well into the new year :what:

I guess the thing is, I don't conceal carry any of my guns and I do all my shooting at the ranges. Reliability is important, but I guess I am looking for a little more. I don't know. The deciding factor of my keeping it or selling it was it's value I guess. I paid 359, and if it's current value is so far below that I would be wasting my time I would go ahead and keep it. I just don't know, and undecisiveness is my major character flaw...

***EDIT - Glenn, I totally see what you're saying. I guess it's just I have slowly lost interest in it. I still shoot it, but I don't really see myself missing it too much if it got replaced by a P226 or USP or something. I guess I'll keep looking into this. I'd appreciate any other comments...

Yea, it's going to be an uprade to something. What that something is, is still up for consideration... :D

I say we hold a silent Auction for the man!! That is if your gonna sell it. I will start bidding at $200. Ooopps....did I say that Aloud??:what:

Don't tempt me guys, I'm a college student who's blessed enough (thanks mom and dad) to have some extra cash to support my shooting hobby since I am currently excelling in my classes and spend more time in the books than out working a parttime job. Outside of building up my credit report, I try to avoid las tarjetas de creditos ;)

I guess I'll sleep on it; not that sleeping on anything has done me any good...

NOOOOOOOO!

don't do it, man. it's not worth it. gun selling is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. would you consider a trial separation? think it over, i'm sure you still have feelings for her.

Some members of my family will "pawn" guns to each other when money gets tight. There's no interest charged, so when they come up with the money the "pawned" the gun for, they get their gun back. Might be an option for you...

Danged nice gun for chump change. You will regret selling it! I have a P85 I picked up a few years ago used, gave 200 bucks with a spare pre-ban magazine from a guy I worked with. It's like new condition. I wouldn't sell it for that! I wouldn't sell it, actually. It's too good a gun to sell. I only get rid of stuff I'm not happy with. Don't have too many of those left.

Its been said before but...

You can make bad decsions when money is tight. If sell off your guns - even at fair market prices - it will never be enough to put you over the top and buy back your gun(s) at some later date. If you simply want to get rid of one, thats another story but don't sell it off thinking you're going to get enough for it for any reason, you won't and the money will be gone before you can blink. Then where are you?
