Thinking about IDPA

There isn't one in Twin from what I understand in speaking to a customer who lives their. He goes to Mountain Home or Boise, and was considering making the drive down to Kaysville, UT to attend the matches that are held there.
 
well that's awesome. I have to say that with all the people around here through out the smaller communities I am surprised that there is not something like that.
 
The IDPA website has a search for matches in your area. If they're anything like most shooters and shooting sports, they'll be glad to let you watch, give you advice/information and will in all likelyhood invite you to give it a try.
I'm about to do the same BTW. Luckily for me the range I'm a member of 10 minutes from my house hosts matches.

Up here in Idaho Falls, we have a weekly match on Wednesday evenings out at South East Idaho Practical Shooters, they start at 6 or 7.
 
I have a friend in the Idaho Falls area that just started shooting their. His talking about it is what got me thinking.
 
Closest listed on IDPA website is in Bellevue, an hour to your north. Otherwise, it's Boise or Idaho Falls.

Welcome to competitive shooting. Here in Ohio, a much more populous part of the country, I've still got to drive an hour or more to almost every match I attend.
 
I shoot in Boise (actually the matches are in Nampa and Parma, so a bit farther than that.) If you are interested in checking out a match come over to boiseshooters.com for the latest schedules. Generally there is a Nampa Match on the 2nd Saturday of the month and a Parma Match on the fourth saturday of the month. I say generally because this month there are two in Nampa and none in Parma, and during the summer we are having short matches on the fourth Saturday of the month (this Saturday).

I usually catch one every other month or so. If you are interested in attending one at Nampa, PM me and I'd be happy to meet up, introduce you around, and show you the ropes.
 
I just got a hold of the president of a gun club in Jerome and it looks like they have new IDPA group starting up. I am in the process of trying to contact them now.

As a self taught shooter, I am looking forward to spending time with folks who may be able to help me learn more about shooting.

And that's really the very best part. What, and how rapidly, folks can learn on their own is almost universally exceeded by an order of magnitude when they join others and practice together. And the most fundamental thing practicing with the IDPA group will teach you is how to work competently and safely with a gun in dynamic environments.

Just take ammo to the match. People will let you use their stuff.
 
USPSA is fun. Unfortunately my work/life schedule keep interfering with my shooting hobby. I've made only one USPSA pistol match this year, and two other rifle matches.

Fun times, though. Definitely worth waking up early and driving a while.

Any day you get to shoot for fun, is a good day.
 
@OP -- IDPA just shoot it, forget the watch first.

There are a good number of videos on YouTube - including those hosted in ID
so you can get an idea. PowerFactor has a couple of what to expect at your first match videos hosted there.

The current rule book is a bit more complicated than it needs to be, read thru the safety and shooter sections - you can skip the Safety Officer and Match Director sections.
Don't spend too much time trying to memorize it ... there is a New Rule Book for Oct 1st and in reality, most of the rules are learned best by doing - ie - you can get an aneurysm trying to read about a reload with retention vs a tactical reload in the rule book, and the reality is that it just doesn't' matter.

Do check with the hosting facility to find out if you have other rules to comply with - for example, can you conceal carry arriving / leaving the property. Do you have to check in with them. Is there a required safety course.

I see your question on many of the forums around the net, so you can do some searching and get 300 million answers.

My advice is to keep it simple, and shoot. You must be safe with your pistol, it is not a place for training, first time shooters.

And don't kill any kittens ;-)
