I'm thinking about carrying my 4" 1911 in my cargo pocket. It fits just about perfectly with the barrel pointing backwards and the grip pointed up (I'm new to CCW so feel free to offer safety suggestions if this doesn't sound good). However it prints a little. I have some approximately 1/16" thick shiny black leather that I was thinking of making a small in-the-pocket holster out of. Will this be enough to soften the printing angles and make it look like I'm just carrying a big wallet (I made my wallet myself and it has room for more cash than I ever have :uhoh: ) in each cargo pocket? Would it be good to maybe make the rear part of the holster as wide as the thickness of the 1911 (perhaps using closed cell foam or something)?

Thanks!

Hi

I make holsters as a hobby business and will be happy to give advice if you want it.

May I suggest first tho that you take a piece of that leather, make a small pouch, and put a piece of non stainless steel in it and carry it a while.

Reason is a lot of leather is chrome tanned and WILL rust your gun quick when you get it warm.

Wouldnt want that to happen to your handgun

Thank you for that reminder. The leather I was going to use is chrome tanned. I also have some thicker vegetable tanned leather, would that be more acceptable?

Yes vegetable tanned is the right stuff

Also you can wrap your gun in saran wrap and then wet the leather and form it to the gun.

If you like that sort of thing:)

That's an idea for me to keep in mind (water forming), but I don't think it work this time, as I'm going to need to rotate the gun 90 degrees while drawing it. I know it's not going to be the fastest draw, but when I zip the cargo pocket closed it is definitely concealed with an extremely small chance of inadvertant disclosure - if the leather will solve the printing issue.

Again, thanks!

cargo carry

the cargo pockets tend to be somewhat above the knee & a heavy object in them ( even self-contained) would gain a momentom force when you move quickly/change directions. This may prove irksome to your thigh. Just a thought. good luck

I pocket carry a Kimber UC in a holster by hbeleatherworks.com (there's a picture of it on Eric's site). In the spring/summer/fall, I carry it in cargo pocket shorts but in the large pocket BEHIND the cargo pocket. I find it to be comfortable, accessible and reasonably well concealed.

PM HiWayMan, he has made a couple of holsters for me and my wife. He does great work. I'm a little biased though, he's my brother.:p Ask him about the first holster he made out of duct tape and an empty plastic milk jug. :what: His work has come a long way since those days.:D
