Well, I was going to go Rock River...then I came across something that might be better...

VLTOR MUR upper receiver. I can probably get my dealer/gunsmith to build me an upper on one with rifle length gas system and handguards (or rail system)

And put it on an LMT lower. I might also see if my dealer can get a CMMG, instead, depending on costs. But I think my dealer will help me put together the upper with the MUR cheaper...

Anything I should be aware of? I don't know anything about gas blocks, etc, but I figure my 'smith will be more knowledgeable.

Avenger29 - I'm about to order a VLTOR MUR and CMMG lower with the same 16" mid as your post suggests, as a complete built gun straight from CMMG throwing in the KNS anti rotation pins and CMMG's EGRESS bolt upgrade for ~$1200

I can't find anything wrong with the MUR my self and looks like it's a very well made upper.

Will Learn - Bushmasters piston upper is made by P.O.F. and there is a KABOOM thread on arf.com with sever posters saying they have had bad experiences with the piston pushing the BCG straight back out the top of the upper (on POF guns)

Thinking is that there chambers may be on the tight side causing pressure spikes. Just be aware that there MAY be a problem with POF piston uppers (which BM uses)

RTFM

The MUR1 is a great upper receiver. Mate it with a nice billet lower for a great upper/lower fit. I had an 18" rifle built using a MUR1 and a Sun Devil billet lower and the project looks and shoots awesome.

the KNS anti rotation pins

I'm getting those too.
I am having this rifle built by my smith because I want to pick and choose parts so I can eliminate as much of the "34 Ways to Cut Costs on an AR-15". I want this rifle to last a long time. I am not going with an off the shelf rifle that may have problems or is not up to my standards.

Get a complete Stag lower, ship that to your dealer.

Then you can shop around for a complete upper and have that shipped to your house.

Buying an AR that way saves the 11% excise tax.

Resist the urge to buy a bunch of tacticool stuff right out of the gate. Buy ammo and training.

Buy the parts and put it together yourself. It's not rocket science

Exactly! You don't need a 'smith to build an AR anything. If you don't want to pop for the tools (which you can pick up very cheaply) find someone who is willing to loan them to you.
IMHO I think billet uppers and lowers are overated and certainly overpriced. They don't do anything better than an upper or lower from a forging. Sure, they look a little prettier because all surfaces have to be machined but functionally they're no better.
