I am thinking about selling my Sig P229. I just don't really "need" it anymore. I use to live in a bad area, and it was a nice piece of mind for my safety. However, I have moved to a much nicer area now and I don't feel that I really need it any more.

My question is this, do you think I will be able to get $500 for it? I have shot the guy only a few times since I have owned it, and its in great condition. I would not sell it UNLESS I can get $500, not a penny less. (Its a real nice gun)

What do you guys think?

Do you own other handguns that you prefer? If so, I would still hang onto it. I owned a non-railed P229 .40, while owning my Kimber 1911 and my Sig P226 .40. I found I didn't shoot the 229 as much as the others, sold it, and still regret selling it. It was very concealable, had reasonable power, decent accuracy (I could tear one ragged hole in the center of mass of a silhouette target at 15' on a good day, and keep everything on the target on a bad day), and decent capacity. If you have a CCW permit, and have to take your main handgun into the smith or send it off for some work, it's nice to have a second option.

Are you selling it to finance another handgun? I'd still hold onto it, and just save up for what you want. More satisfaction that way, and less seller's remorse.

If you don't own another handgun, I would advise against selling it, for obvious reasons. One of those situations where "I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it". Bad things happen in good areas too.

If you can't be talked out of selling it, or really need the money, I think $500 (depending upon it's condition of course) is too low. You should be able to get at least $600 out of it. Don't go to a gunstore to sell it. They'll gouge you. I traded a S&W 686 for my AR-15, and only got $200 on the trade.

Easily. Put it up on an auction site like Gunbroker with $500 plus shipping as a minimum bid, and I'll bet you get lots of hits.

Is it your only defensive handgun? Then I wouldn't sell it. If you have another gun (or guns) you like better or you want to finance the purchase of something you like better, then OK.

well, heres the deal.

1) Yes, I have my concealed permit.

2) No, I do not own any other handguns.

3) I cant carry it any because I am a freshman at college now and I spend 90% of my week on campus (so no handguns in the car or on school property)

4) I don't NEED the money, but I could use it towards something else.

I haven't made up my mind yet. I am just curious if I could get anything out of it. Just throwing bait out into the water, thats all.

Looks like my original question is moot. I still vote that you keep it, going to cost you a lot more to replace it later down the road.

Unless you plan to be a proffessor and spend your life on a college campus I would just keep it. Even then I would still probably keep it. You could sell it for more than $500 very easily I would think. The thing is a P229 is a nice gun and it will cost you more than $500 to replace it later. In 4 years you will be done with college. Besides CC there is good reason to keep it.

You liked having it for defense but now live in a better area. Fair enough but crime still happens in good areas. I live in a very nice area but I wouldn't go without a gun.

You can still shoot and enjoy your gun even if you don't CC.

If you just aren't into it and don't see yourself wanting a similar pistol in the future then I am sure you could sell it for $500. I wouldn't sell but that me.

I have moved to a much nicer area now and I don't feel that I really need it any more.

Interesting logic. I worked for an inner city youth center in one of the lousiest parts of town for 4 years without a single problem. I rode a bike to and from work almost every day to boot.

The one and only time in my life I did fall victim to violent crime however, was in one of the nicest parts of town.

My advice is obey the old adage, and never judge a book by its cover. If I only had one gun, it would be the last thing I would sell.

to be totally honest with you...

you'll probably regret selling if you do.
i sold my gun collection and i'm still very depressed about it.
but if you do decide,i may buy it from you .....

Keep it, it will cost you more than $500 to replace it in the future. Also, a large percentage of robbery type crime occurs in "nice" parts of town. That's where the targets are.

Willingly giving up your only firearm... you will be willingly giving up one of your civil rights... like those that choose not to vote. It is a Quality pistol, it will cost you in the long run if you sell it... one day they may not be available to the public, or over $1000 when you leave school. If you cannot take it with you then lock it up... for a rainy day... it will rain... is raining somewhere right now.

THR Rule #7: When in doubt, keep the gun. :D

Most definitely keep your SIG. Trust me, you'll regret the sale later. Besides, that's one of the nicer semi-autos on the market (I know--I have one too).
