I currently carry a Springfield Micro-Compact Operator. I have carried it for about a year now. I shoot it well but am not a fan of the 7 rounds. Further, it has become my HD weapon (next to an AR) which I really do not like.

I have been considering a switch to two different sets of guns. The first set would be a XDm 4.5 9mm and a XDs 9mm. The other set I am considering is the M&P 4.25 9mm and the Shield 9mm. I have shot the XDm and the shield but have not shot a full size M&P 9mm or XDs.

I am looking to make the full size my EDC as well as my HD weapon (so I can attach a light). The XDs or Shield would be for those times where I had to make sure that the gun would be completely unseen. Can anyone provide more insight on this and what their preference would be (along with reasons).

Well, I leave a SIG P-232 with 7 rounds of .380 in it beside the bed at night.

Unless it is a 5-shot S&W .38 Spl revolver.

But maybe I live in a safer neighborhood then you do??

Or, I don't worry about it quite as much as you do anymore??

Or, I have survived quite nicely with a 7-round 1911, or 6 or 5-round S&W for 69 years.
Including a walk on the wild side a time or two.

Could be any one of the three I guess?

But I don't loose any sleep over not having half a box of ammo in my gun at any given time..

All the guns you are considering are good and will serve you well. What you should buy is what you like best, what fits your budget, what satisfies your need to have more rounds at the ready and etc. It's a matter of personal choice and all you really need to do is make a decision and then practice, practice and practice some more.

There are many members of this forum, myself included, who do not in any way feel under protected with seven rounds.

Why do you dislike your Springfield for HD? I'd imagine whatever brings that feeling forward needs to be avoided in any future gun purchases.

As far as reasons for any of my gun purchases, they are many and varied. I've been buying guns since the mid '60s and to me they're just another purchase of things I like and use. Ultimate reason: because I like one and I want to own it. Basically, I've found very few guns I've disliked and since I like to cast, load and shoot that's what I do ... among other things. I'm reasonably good at it and I enjoy it immensely.

For me, I just stopped worrying about high capacity. I carried them for years, Glock, Sig, Beretta, etc. But I decided that 8+1 in my favorite 1911 will be the thing I shoot best and want to carry and practice with most. I see very few real-life situations that would require me to shoot more than that with no pause long enough to reload. If that situation DID occur, it is unlikely ANY handgun would save me.

Common sense would dictate using compact that can use full size gun magazines as reloads. Example would be G17/G19>>>G26. I assume same can be had from S&W or Springfield XD.

Learn to carry a spare magazine. Problem solved. If its capacity you want. Sig P226 TacOps. 20+1.

Interchangeable magazines would be a factor but they wouldn't be the deciding factor.

of the choices you gave I'd opt for the S&W because I'd rather put Americans to work than Croatians and I believe in Karma

I would also look at the xdm compact over the xds, and look at the m&p 9c over the shield. Both are very small and can inter change mags with your full size.
