Thinking about trying Balostol.

My sense of smell went south a long time ago. My ENT could not help either. Im going to try some. I did see Hicok45 clean his AR and lube it with it. Some say it smells minty. Im going to get the pump bottle. Amazon has 2 bottle with a pump sprayer for 37.50

Hickup endorses everything, He probably uses it as a hair tonic!
Another one falls for the claims.

I like it. But tomorrow there will be a brand new elixir that will be good to cleanse the skin and free it of pimples as well. I use it mainly on my Sharps rifle but I do use boiling water first on the barrel and then mop it with Ballistol. Good on the wood stock too, so don't have to worry about stains.

I think Stogerol was similar if not just Ballistol relabeled.

"Stogerol kills pus-germs and bacteria in wounds in man and beast, and sterilizes them until medical assistance can be procured. Effective in running sores, chafing, and soreness after horseback riding, perspiring and sore feet, burns, frostbite, prickle heat, eczema, rheumatism, gout, colds in the head, coughs (rub nose, throat, and chest or other affected parts with Stogeol.) If used before hiking and hunting tramps, prevents soreness and chafing. Stogerol relieves piles, eczema, dry and moist, destroys fleas, body lice, manage, crabs, scabies and all other vermin of man and beast."

Not to mention cleaning and preserving wood, metal, and leather as found on guns and gear.

I got a spray bottle (non-aerosol) to try a couple of years ago. Cleans out oily residue ok. Dissolves powder residue acceptably. Does not help with carbon or other hard residue. I like Ed’s Red better in general.

I like Ballistol. I was introduced to the product in the late 1990's, at a hardware store, where the counter guy sprayed it on his hand and licked it off. While I'm generally impressed by the lower toxicity of the product, I haven't consumed it myself.

I'm a fan of CLP's (a product category and not a brand name), and less toxic products, and Ballistol is one of those that I use and like. I have both the liquid and aerosol and use both. Due to the aroma, my Ballistol use is primarily on my garden tools (I regularly wipe the deck of my lawn mower with Ballistol), but if it was all I had for my guns, I'd be OK with that.

With a lot of gun related things over the years, I've come over from the "is it the best" camp to the "is it adequate" camp.

It probably started with the 9mm craze. Is the 9mm round the most effective round for personal protection? I don't think so. Heck, it's probably not even the most effective round out of an auto-loader. However, it is adequate for most personal protection tasks, and effective enough that it is probably the most popular semi-auto round.

Likewise, Ballistol probably isn't the best cleaner, or lube, or protectant. However, I think it is adequate for all those uses. If all you ever used on your guns was Ballistol, and you didn't abuse them, like keeping them submerged in the Gulf of Mexico for a decade, you'll probably have a lifetime of effective use of Ballistol on your firearms.

I get there are guys out there that want to clean their guns to the point that they are sterilized so you could eat off them, but all I want my guns to do is function properly, and a single product like Ballistol will allow that.

I use it and like it, primarily for BP guns, but I have used it on modern stuff. I generally keep rem oil or break free CLP around for the all-in-one gun oil for the range though. I have no illusions about one being better than the other. Ballistol emulsifies with water and that DOES matter to me in BP guns. I like the idea of the oil getting wherever the water is and hopefully protecting the metal until the water evaporates.

Mine came. I could not smell it. But i asked my wife and son's G/F to smell it. Wife said chemical smell. The G/F said WD 40 and minty smell. I too keep a can of Rem-oil in my range bag.

I'm curious. I can see spraying it on gun to help remove residue, etc but I hate to spray it around my python or old Smith wood. I know I wouldn't spray oil on the wood so freely so is balistol that wood friendly.

I used it today after my outing. It cleaned nice for me. I shot 60 rounds today in my 45 colt. It removed the powder residue around my forcing cone,. And in the cylinders nicely. But man is that stuff a mess when spraying it. Im going to put it in a jar. And apply it with a syringe.

Looks like all failed except wd40 and one shot plus 3 others. Wonder if that's due to a heavy based solids lubricant or a pure water displacing lubrucant. Lots of good info on link which I suppose I could find a link that said the complete opposite results on the internet but I like most use what we like or grew up with.

I got me some ballistol ordered, should be at my door wednesday.

It is available as an aerosol and in a liquid form. Each has their place.
