Thinking of getting this to my son , SW M & P in .22 LR

I don't own either, but have had a good bit of trigger time on both, because I have friends that have them. I prefer the SW. Like you said, the Sig (the ones I've seen) and pretty finicky with ammo.

With the two Smiths that I've had trigger time with, they ran without a hitch. So far, I've run Federal bulk, CCI blazer, CCI Standard Velocity, CCI Mini Mags, Federal Auto Match and a couple of others. I can't comment on 20 yard groups because we didn't shoot for groups. I will say that sighting in at seven yards produced nice tight holes and at 25 yards hitting shot shell hulls, golf balls and clay pigeons wasn't difficult at all. What I didn't like about the SW was that they only got one mag with each of the pistols and extras are around $30, each.

Honestly, I think I'll be picking one up when I finish paying for a project that I'm working on. Of course, you should also consider that the Sigs are pretty reliable with ammo that they like (although the choices may be more limited) and the grip frame is smaller on the Sig (I don't know how old your son is).
 
While many of the new crop are fine pistols in their own right the trend seems to favor platform training over real accuracy. That can pay big dividends to shooters equipped with the corresponding centerfire models but may not be the best choice for others.

Good recommendations will depend on age, skill level and accuracy requirements.
 
My son is 15 y o soon . He is graduating from middle school. ANd so as i gift id like him to have this one before entering high school. He s been a good kid.
He has started shooting my Marlin 880 SQ .22 LR when he was 9 yrs old . Then at 10 i got him to shoot the AK 47 , SKSs and he did good. He killed a hog the next day he learned to shoot the AK. When he reached 13 yo he shot a .243 Remington 700. And now i want him to get into handguns. He did try the Mosquito and like it bec of the small grip. I havent let him try the Ruger 5.5 Bull barrel, the grips on those is kind of funky , we will see.
 
S&W's 22A might be worth a look along with the Mk. III and Buckmark. With any young shooter I prefer a safety and chose the Beretta Neos when teaching my (now) 8 yr. old son. When he's a bit bigger he'll graduate to a Ruger Single-Six and a 1911.

Kudos for your choice of gift, my father first gifted me a 12 ga. at age 13 which I still use and still cherish.
 
I've got a M&P22 pistol and find it pretty accurate, (I can keep all my shots in the black at 10 yards if I do my part.) but to find out how accurate it can be, would be hard IMO. There is no top rail to mount a red dot or some sort of opticical site, and I'm not sure the under the barrel rail would give the best results mounting a laser, but it might be worth a try. I will say this; "It's really fun to shoot." LM
 
The M&P22 is made by Umarex. The same folks who make the Walther P22. Same quality, or lack of quality that is. The Ruger SR22 and Bersa 22 are similar duty-style pistols but aren't made out of zinc like the Walther and M&P22.
 
I prefer the S&W. Haven't shot the others much. But we have a M&P 22.

It's great for training and easy to handle. With a safety it is a good gun to learn on. So later on when you are ready to move up to a higher caliber you have the muscle memory to handle a gun with an external safety.

One note, M&P isn't to finicky about ammo BUT it is finicky about being clean and well lubbed. We have had a few problems with our and it has been mostly due to needing some extra lub. (I also had a bad casing with shell. The shell fired but split the case and lodged in the chamber. Took some dong to get it out!)

Just make sure that the gun us cleaned and well lubbed and you should have lots of fun.
Plus 22LR ammo is cheap!
 
I do not own the Sig Sauer Mosquito but I do own the M&P22. The S&W will eat just about anything you feed it, but not so the Sig Sauer.

That being said, I want the Mosquito also and will own one one day soon. If you son has smaller hands he may be happier with the Mosquito since in is 90% of the full sized pistols. Also, the Mosquito works fine with quality ammo such as the CCi mini mag.

I'm 62 years old, but if my Dad bought me a Mosquito, I'd give him a big hug and buy him a beer even if I were only 17 years old. :>)

You will do fine with either the Sig or the Smith. Believe me, your son will like either.

Currently i have Ruger Mk 2 5.5 bull barrel , my first gun bought in 1995 . Ive put around 24000 rds into it and going strong. Then last year i got a RUger Mk 3 Hunter with 6 inch barrel from my brother. Both these two i havent let my son fired yet. Its so happened a friend of mine had his Mosquito when we were all at the range and he got to shoot it. He likes it bec of the small size.
 
I handled one a few hrs ago at Gander MTn . The gun feels like the full size and trigger break is so light like 3 .5 lbs. It sure is nice.
