I just finished school and I really hate the 8 month winter that we have here in PA. PA is a fairly gun friendly state and I want to move to a state at least as good as PA in that regard. A large percentage of rednecks and/or people who say words like "ain't" and "worsh" would be preferable but not mandatory. :D
A good chance of finding an job (entry level IT field) is also a big thing.
I know that this isn't just a "Guns General Discussion" thread but the right to own guns for protection and recreation is a huge thing to me. It is so big that I won't even consider an anti-gun state. It is because of that reason that I am asking advice from you guys yet again.
If this thread violates the rules, I apologize.
Thanks.

Just an old sweet song...

Georgia has a lot going for it.

1. Shall Issue
2. Castle Doctrine
3. Car = House, for Castle Doctrine
4. Permit comes laminated, fits in wallet (ha ha)
5. Concealed OR Open carry with permit
6. HOT HOT chicks in Atlanta, just check the Airport Airport out
7. Everyone says "Y'all" and "fittin' ta" and "used to could" (there's a test)

...
8. Interesting enough, is one of the only states that does not require proof of proficiency for a carry permit -- WHY you ask? Because the right to keep and bear arms is just that -- a right, not a priviledge.

What part of PA are you from? Just curious, my wife and I were born and raised in the Reading area.

Do what we did....moved to Phoenix, AZ.

Gun laws are as good if not better then PA.
1. Shall issue permits, however a 16 hr class is required. Permit is good for any handgun.
2. Open carry is legal and it is not unusual (but no longer common) to see people carry (no body freaks out). If you go hiking you are almost expected to carry.
3. You can have a handgun in a glove box loaded as long as it is in a holster.
4. No restrictions on transporting as long as it is either visible or in a case if concealed.
5. No AWB type bans.
6. Many places to shop for firearms and gear. Major gun shows almost every other month.

Jobs are available for entry level IT. Actually, you will probably do better here then in PA. We were home to visit in Jan. I checked the want adds in the local paper and it was dismal. My wife would be considered entry level and she found a job in 4 weeks without really trying hard. She is even making better money. Experienced IT is more of a challenge, jobs are here but the pay scale is lower then back east ( a lower paying job is better than no job).

Only catch here is the summer as everyone knows....but it’s a dry heat :fire: (say that here in July and you will get smacked).
You have 3 bad months really. It is our "winter". Which is still better then the winters back in PA.

Anyway, that is my suggestion. Here is a link to help with research. Housing, jobs, etc. http://www.azcentral.com/
Good luck with whatever you choose.

Cheers

Mr. Goon.... just head West one state... Ohio just passed the CCW bill after MANY years of waiting. I'm not sure about PA laws but they aren't too bad here.

I am from Clearfield. I doubt that any of you guys have heard of it. If you put your finger in the middle of the state and move slightly west, you are there. :D
Gun laws in PA are pretty loose. We have Shall Issue and no AWB type crap. On my 21st birthday, I bought a Ruger Blackhawk, then walked across the street to the courthouse and got my CCW application. All you have to do is clear the check and pay the $25 and you are set for 5 years in PA. We get a little ID card like a driver's license. :D
Anyhow, I have thought about AZ. I like my trees. Are there any areas that are at least somewhat wooded out there? I know next to nothing about that state. I also thought about New Mexico.
Really though, I have been thinking about the middle southern states the most. They are far enough for a longer summer but not too far to keep me from coming back to see my family if they need me really bad. I also thought about Georgia too as I have heard that you can get some good but cheap land down there and that the people are pretty cool for the most part.
My biggest goal is to eventually end up with a little place in the woods and to have a political climate that will allow me to be able to teach my children (when I have some) to use a rifle without having the cops called on me. Gun ownership is a huge part of my life and I won't live in a state that won't trust me to protect myself and my loved ones. I will not pay taxes to fund the actions that would disarm me. That is why I am asking you guys this stuff. I need to know about this above all else before I make the move.
Anyhow, thanks for the advice. Keep it coming. I can use all the input I can get on this one.

yoons from Clearfield?
nah ah!
betcha been over ta Phillipsburgh ta Grices.
been up ta State?
i heard the Monster Trucks was gonna be at the Jordon Center.

i also seen the stocking truck over at Port Matilda

head fer Cary/Raleigh NC
you will fit in fine, just fine

Move to Ky close to PA and were gun friendly. A permit here is for Deadly Weapons not just hand guns. Bowie knifes and all those other type tools you always wanted to carry, but were never allowed to . Don t even think about Ohio almost as bad as Ca. I escaped from there when i turned 18 and over the years I have helped others to escape across the river.Under ground railroad in reverse. Want freedom move to the south or south west

Like G21dude said, Georgia's pretty good, except for a lot of the Yankees that have moved down here. ("There's more Yankees in Atlanta now than there were when Sherman came through." -- Lewis Grizzard, great Southern philosopher.)

The idea of the "solid South" seems to have finally broken here in Georgia, meaning that people are more likely to vote for the traditional conservative candidate than the Democrat, and individual rights still matter here. (Folks who don't know what I'm talking about, PM me and I'll explain.) In 1992, Libertarian candidate Jim Hudson won 3 percent of the vote in the U.S. Senate race in Georgia. Doesn't sound like much, but it is more than most Libertarian candidates for a federal office get. (In fact, Hudson's vote count was enough to deny a majority to either major-party candidate and it led to a runoff, in which the Republican won. How many Libertarians can say they screwed up the major parties?)

Pa winters may suck, but yall have some of the best and the most gun selections on the used markets. How do so many nice old models end up in Pa? Is there some kind of underground railroad for firearms fleeing from the occupied territories that stop in Pa?

Darn you figured it out. It was supposed to be a secret.

Actually I would guess it's somewhat due to being partially surrounded by NY, NJ and MD. We also have a ton of gunshops, there are at least 20 within 15 miles of me.

Idaho. Class 3 state, "shall issue" CCW, RKBA protected in the State Constitution. I've been here 17yrs and haven't looked back.

We don't have "8 month winters" here in the Keystone State. We enjoy the distinctiveness of all four seasons, with proper, incremental weather and temperature changes every 3 months or so.

Seasonal temperature patterns just don't instantly shift from 35 F to 75 F in the course of one week, as some of you folks may prefer. Such phenomenon made me hate Florida with a vengeance, and I didn't waste anytime leaving that place after my 18 month tour of duty at Eglin was complete.

As for maintaining one's domicile in PA, why not reconsider? As several out of staters have already suggested, it is a good state for gun rights. One thing not yet mentioned, but alluded to in Majic and MikeB's posts, is that PA is second only to Texas in the volume and frequency of gun shows. This statistic comes to us from the NRA itself.

The CCW permit process here in PA is absolutely low calorie:
$19.00
5 year validity
*No* training requirements
No specific firearm endorsements on permit

Unlike some folks in other states, we don't obsess about the number of Southerners who have resettled up north here. Yes, more folks have made their way south than the other way around, but our "Welcome to PA" is generally non-conditional.

Politicially, PA is:
Pittsburgh on one side,
Philadelphia on the other side,
and Alabama in between (in only the good ways, mind you.)

Some of the best choices (from a gun rights standpoint) would be: AK, GA, IN, ID, MT, TN, AZ, VT, WY...

Places to avoid: CA, MA, NJ, NY, HI, IL, CT.

If you're looking for entry level IT, I'd check out Virginia. Between NoVa, Richmond, and the Norfolk region, you'll have IT covered. Unfortunately, those areas are the more liberal areas of Va, but still not completely gun unfriendly. NoVa's not far from PA so you could easily visit when you want. Three of my coworkers are PA expats.

Why didn't you have Kentucky in there? Or don't you want to say anything good about the Big Blue?;) After all we have Knob Creek and if you can conceal it you can carry it!:neener: You Big Orange folks aren't jealous are you?:scrutiny: And we also have fast women and Beautiful horses(or is it the other way around?:p ):D :D

I wish we had 8 months of winter. I love winter. It's normally from January to March. This year it was long: from November to April, and I'm sorry to see it go (darn this 80 degree weekend).

Northern PA is a bit cooler. Anything south and east of the Appalachians is significantly warmer. You could look in that area. Of course, then you have to deal with the heat and humidity of Summer. SE PA is a bit weird in climate because it gets like Vermont in the winter, but like Atlanta in the summer.

I like what I've seen of Idaho.

I prefer temperatures between cool and warm.
I can deal with heat no problem but the cold and winter just gets me down. It acutally depresses me to just look outside and see nothing but snow with no end in sight. Some winter is OK with me but the more winter I see the worse it gets.
We still had snow on our windshields the other night.
There is just something wrong with that. :cuss:

Anyhow, thanks for the advice and keep it coming.

Another State to avoid is Maryland. Brady Campaign rates Maryland the best (means the most) in gun control. CCW permits are very had to get.

The past two winters have been pretty cold. A number of mornings the temperature is anywhere from five to 20 degrees. Some of the winters prior to that were quite warm.

The area I am speaking of is around Washington DC. Probably easier to get an entry level IT job around here because the general area always has low unemployment because of the US Government.

July and August around here are hazy, hot and humid. Kind of smoggy too.

Cost of living is high here too. They may be another consideration for any move.

The winters here aren't that bad! 4 months long usually, from December to March, if that.

Besides, we have basically the best gun laws in the area. Better than NY, NJ, OH, MD, and DE. For all practical purposes, the laws here are the same as VA, WV, GA, NC, SC, and most of the northern states west of Illinois.

If you want to move, I'd consider moving to either the Philly or Pittsburgh areas. It's 63* out right now, 27 miles from the county line with Philadelphia, about an hour's drive from center city.

Well, I would recoment seriously reconsidering your choice of fields.

There are thousands and thousands of out of work, nearly destitute IT people with 5, 10, 15 and more years of experience.

Hot markets that are reasonably pro gun would be VA, TN and TX althought not San Antonio :p

Austin might be one of the best but I hear there is a lot of expansion going to TN.

Good luck finding a job - I would look in every state you find acceptable and go where you can get work.

goon,

I don't blame you one bit. I lived in Pittsburgh until 1998. I relocated to Austin, TX for a job in the Semiconductor Industry. Pittsburgh has lots of good people and my best friends are still there. I was fortunate in my job as I traveled all over the US to different Fabs. Every time i would return from a trip, I would ask myself why do I keep coming back here. I don't know how well you know Pittsburgh but it's one of filthiest cities I ever seen and I seen lots of them. I can remember going to the convention center, paying $9.00 for parking walking under bridges that if you look up you can see the cars through the holes that have rotted through from the past winter that were never repaired and pigeon???? 6" high from one end of the bridge to the other...absolutely filthy!

Seasons in PA...You mean 6 months of cold wet winter followed up with a never-ending rainy spring and oh my gosh it soooo hot (87 with 95% humidity) summer. I'd never want to leave either. The fall is very beautiful...I'll give you that.

There are too many beautiful places in the country to consider. AZ is awesome. Austin was actually my 2nd choice.

One thing about people from PA...there everywhere...Ya even in TX

don't be afraid to give it a go. Dallas is not my favorite city by has lots to offer in the IT industry. Check out the hometown forum on AR15.com

Lots of Luck
