I have a very nice Springfield Armory EMP that shoots great. Very accurate! I've been using it for my conceal carry,. . . . but find that it is really a bit too heavy. Since the new XDm compact has come out, I was thinking that it would be a good gun to exchange with the EMP. I don't have a job, so I can't "just buy the XDm, too". But I feel like the XDm would be a better choice for carry.

What do you think?

How will you be carrying it? If IWB, you might want to look at some of the "slim" polymer models available these days.

If you want compact double stack I'd also like to recommend the S&W M&P compact series.

What caliber is your EMP by the way? My dad's been looking to buy a .40 EMP and might be interested in buying it if you are interested.

I just checked the Springfield site, and the XDm 9mm compact is one ounce heavier than the 9mm EMP. Also, since it carries four more rounds, it's more like 2-1/2 ounces heavier.

If you go to a higher capacity gun, most if not all of the weight savings from the polymer frame will be eaten up by the weight of the extra ammunition.

My EMP is a 9mm.

I didn't see any specifications on the XDm compact. Hard to believe it is actually heavier, with a polymer frame, . . . and with the NON bull barrel [like the EMP has].

I just checked as well.

SA XDm C 9mm w/empty mag 27.0 ozs.

SA EMP 9mm w/empty mag 26.0 ozs.

Weird but true. LOL

If you think about it though, the EMP is smaller, has aluminum alloy frame, and thinner. Personally for a carry weapon I would not make that trade.

I sit here quite surprised. Found the specs and it is true.

So yeah, I guess the EMP actually IS a better carry gun, since it would be some what thinner.

What I WOULD like to do is change out the ambi thumb safety for something smaller [and not ambi]. Thinking of the thumb safety that is on the Colt Agent. That's a side issue, though.

Well, . . . how about we just discuss what you think about the new XDm compact from here on out [if so desired].

Your weight savings isn't there.

The EMP is a very, very nice pistol. If yours is reliable, I would hang on to it. The XDm is a nice pistol for what it is, a service weapon. The only thing you'll actually gain is the ability to carry a few more rounds and maybe a little better reliability if you intend on dragging your XDm through some mud and dirt. If I were you, I'd keep the EMP. I own an XDm and it is a great tool that does anything you ask of it (unless you ask it to look pretty!), but nothing to write home about.

That being said, given the employment situation...I could certainly understand selling it to put some cash in your pocket and picking up a used XDm at a good price. You could privately sell that EMP, buy an XDm and have a whole bunch of ammo money. :)

Sell....................to me for a good price.

The EMP came out just after I bought my S/A Micro Compact (now called loaded)

Agreed. . . . . best to keep the EMP at this point.

I'm not too interested in some of the other guns like the Taurus Slim or the Walther PPS. The PPS is just too expensive for what it is [though I'm sure it is a fine gun], and I had issues with a Taurus semi auto pistol and [thus] have lost confidence in that brand.

Though, I sometimes feel like I should be carrying something less expensive, . . . but then I've already read that debate. :)

If you want same dimensions but lighter and less expensive, perhaps look at the Kahr P9.

You won't gain any additional capacity.
What you will gain is that you can buy a new Kahr P9 for less money than you'll make on the sale of the used EMP. For a guy outta work, that means extra money for you.
The P9 is same thickness or perhaps even slimmer than the EMP, and is lighter.
It's also VERY nicely made.

A good belt and holster makes all the difference. You can't skimp on the belt...I've tried and it just doesn't work. If you're cheap (like me), 5.11 makes leather belts gun that aren't emblazoned with their logo so that they don't scream "I'm uber-tactical!" They can be had all over the net for under $20. They don't stay looking nice very long (like more pricey galco belts), but they certainly do the job that department store belts won't do.

Keep the EMP its like trading in a Audi A4 for a Jetta. A good holster and belt will make all the difference. The gun will disspear with the right setup. IMHO.

Great deal but sizing is actually 38-30.
They have good close outs from time to time. I bought 3 medium sized belts from there that were on sale for $5. Not bad for a real leather belt that will hold up a gun. Like I said, they wore really fast and look really beat up. Not beat up like old, broken in leather; beat up like you were dragging it down the street. No matter, if my gun is on my belt, my outer shirt covers it most of the time, anyway. Beat up and worn out is stylish now, anyway.

I have heard that about those belts but at that price you cannot pass it up. There was a typo on my last post the sizing is 28-30. I am off my a few inches.... LOL

Yep, at under $10 I'm ok with replacing them every year or two.

Yeah, 28-30 is overly optimistic for most of us. :)
