This explains a lot about the 22lr issues

Any one of those cases could last me for a lifetime of mosin shooting. I'm sure there are people that have piles that big of 22 ammo in their basement.

I use it in my Mosin.. and my PKM.. and my UK VZ 59. :)

I bought a lot because belt feds are hungry.

By comparison my 22 pile is so small I could probably hold it in one hand at this point. I have way fewer than 1000 rounds left, if I include little CB shorts and stuff.

I don't shoot a lot of 22 though. (very rarely, in fact)

Ahh! That's why you buy in bulk!

My last order with AIM was for 15,800 rounds of 7.62x54R.

All of the crates in the photo are full of sealed tins.

The UPS guy HATED me that day they showed up, until I offered to help. His truck suspension was riding on the bump stops I think. :)

FWIW I've never regretted buying bulk surplus comblock ammunition. I wish I'd bought more (and not shot it all) when I was younger. Back when AK ammo was 8 cents a round.

I bought the 7.62x54R when it was selling for $62 / 440 rds.

Surplus ammo, historically, ONLY goes up in price. So it's not a bad investment, either.

Well, much as I'd love to have a couple grand to blow on surplus ammo.....

Sweet stash Trent..
I can see you have a fully developed sense of style when it comes to interior decorating!!

I like the fact that you have an oil filled heater for you ammo.

Not for the ammo, necessarily, but for me. In the winter the room gets down to about 62F; there's no heat vent in there, and the concrete slab gets pretty cold. (I do most of my reloading in the winter.)

So Friday after work I kick on the oil heater to medium, gets the room up to 70F overnight and helps take some of the chill out of the floor. That way when I get up Saturday, I can reload in comfort. :)

Nope. I'm taking it with me. I'll be pulling up to the Pearly Gates in a U-Haul with a trailer.

Here in my part of Georgia, we've seen almost no 22lr show up. The LGS has the same 500rnd bricks of Federal from around early this year, still with the $50.00 price tag on it. They also currently have an inch of dust on them

You guys don't suspect that the hundreds of thousands of new shooters who just recently got into the sport or the astronomical numbers of ammo hungry tacticool 22's sold in the past few years combined with a credit starved expansion adverse manufacturing sector has anything to do with a tight supply,

No of course not. That's crazy talk!

It's all because of a few retired guys hanging around Walmart and a couple dozen gunbroker sellers. ;-)

It is good to read that Remington is tooling up. I have wondered if some of the munitions plants were sitting back to see how long the panic would last. After all, it is very difficult to un-tool not to mention expensive.

I went to the model train store in the area yesterday and I was shocked to see that, not only was he selling guns, but he also had .22 in stock! It was about double pre panic prices. If you think about it, it is not really that much of a stretch, the prime consumers of both are middle aged men with disposable income.
I would encourage all that have some .22 not to buy any. This thing will not last forever.

Crazy talk indeed. Obviously, it's the people who are selling it for 65 bucks a brick who are causing the shortage. I mean, come on, like, totally. Raising the prices always causes a shortage, right?

All I know is this: It has completely killed the youth program at my gun club in my north Atlanta suburb. Once a month we open up the club for Scout groups, Sunday school groups, father/son, and father/daughter couples trying to get youth properly introduced to the fun of shooting sports in a safe environment. This is mostly .22 rifle and occasionally some shotgun. We allow the public to use the club venues, but require guests to bring their own ammo.

We haven't had a single visitor or even a phone call since June.

I hope all the users stockpiling .22 appreciate they are killing the future of the sport.

May 2013, a Saturday, was our annual youth shoot for ages 6-16 open to the public. Cabela's came through with 15,000 rounds of .22LR Aquila subsonic. We had 160 youths signed up
For 2014, we are hoping Cabela's will come through for us again.

Then we have our 4-H county shoot in July where they supply there own guns and ammo every year.

Get a case on order now with your lgs and should arrive by September or b/4, as in 2013. I will be ordering another case in January from my lgs even though have a case on hand that will last me till September. IMO, this shortage will be the same as in 2013.

I belong to a private rifle club and in the past there would be several shooters at the 50-100 yard range, the favorite for rimfire shooters. Not so much now. The irony of all time sales records for 22LR with a dramatic reduction in shooting is hard to miss. Sad too.

This is my anecdotal observation as well. People are saying there are many new shooters, and yes I agree but how many are .22 shooters? I still say people are laying in a LOT of .22LR. And yes some are trying to profit from it. Not that there is anything inherently wrong with the concept.

When the shelves at Wal-Mart are filled with .22LR, I will consider the ammunition drought over. I can shoot handloaded .38 Wadcutters cheaper than I can .22LR right now.

In my area the same old geezers are still at Wal-Mart and Academy every morning hoarding ammo, usually 9mm and .22LR.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I went to Meijer yesterday in Florence KY, not only don't they have .22LR...they still don't have any handgun ammo whatsoever and its been that way for over a year.

This is not a 'bubble' , it is a shortage. A bubble or panic lasts a few months, this is over a year already. I don't know how many months it will take for the manufacturers finally realize that they need to add more production lines or buy another facility to produce more product.

Until that happens, I predict we will still have these same threads a year from now.

I can find 45, 44 and 40 just about everywhere I go at near normal prices. My local WM has been loaded with multiple types of all these calibers for several months.

9mm and 38 are very hit and miss as is 357 with 38 being a bit more normal. 22 is non-existent at the big box stores. Local guys have it at ridiculous prices and they are selling it as fast as they get it in.

I solved the 22 ammo crisis by locking up my 25 round magazines and going to the 10 rounders for guns that have both. 5 shooters with 25 round mags can blow through a lot of ammo pretty fast. Revolvers make it last even longer.

I have received a few thousand rounds of 22 from Cabela's over the past few weeks. 325 here and 500 there. Free shipping and near normal prices. I order it and about a month later it shows up on UPS.

So when .22 is readily available again, how much are you going to stockpile in anticipation of another shortage? My wife and I both have and shoot .22 pistols and M&P 15-22 rifles. We are way down on ammo and are having to save what's left. No more Steel Challenge matches until we can stock up again.
Seems like a lot of folks at WM are buying but not shooting.
