Kerry Is No Threat To Sportsmen
It seems than an organized campaign is being waged to convince sportsmen and gun owners through letters on this page to not vote for John Kerry on the grounds he is "anti gun."
Many of the complaints about Kerry’s record on gun issues stem from his support of the Assault Weapons Ban that Congress failed to renew last month. This law was favored by 77 percent of voters polled nationally, by most police organizations and four former presidents including Reagan and Ford. President Bush said he supported the ban but did nothing to encourage its renewal by the Republican leadership in Congress.
Reasonable people can disagree on some aspects of gun laws, such as regulation of gun show purchases by unlicensed sellers or waiting periods required for gun purchases. Kerry’s record on gun issues may not please everyone but there is nothing to suggest he favors elimination of traditional gun rights in this country.
Agitators on this issue are trying to convince sportsmen and gun owners to support a candidate based on gun issues alone. There are other vital concerns that we face as a nation. Sportsmen would do well to consider the environmental policies of the Bush administration that threaten wilderness areas, clean air and water, and encourage more energy exploration at the expense of conservation.
Defending the rights of gun owners is very important to sportsmen. Nothing John Kerry has said or done threatens the rights of law abiding citizens to own a firearm if they choose to do so. Sportsmen, like all citizens, should consider the entire platforms of the candidates when they go to the polls in November.
