FWIW, I agree with those who say the part was defective from day one, not broken or worn. I can also say pretty definitely that things like that do and did happen with pre-MIM parts as well.

To get a "forged" trigger from S&W you might have to go back a while. IIRC, pre-MIM S&W hammers and triggers were blanked from heavy sheet steel, not forged.
