This extra nice(1973 vintage)6" S&W Model 28-2 had to come home with me. The finish on this gun was more radiant than what I'd normally seen on these guns. I think that the S&W factory gun polisher had spent more time in polishing this specimen, than was usually done. How did I do? Following, are a few pictures of this 28-2:

Very nice. Congrats. A have a 6" as well, but not as nice as yours sounds. Great shooters.

Nice N frame. I have a 6" model 27 and a 4" model 28. They are wonderful shooter's that will never ever leave my collection. Enjoy yours and know that this will not be your last N frame purchase!

Excellent condition and a fine piece. I bought one in 1972 and like a fool sold it. Now I found another from 1976 and it is staying with me, and then going to my kids. They don't make them like that anymore.

I think your finish is probably nicer than mine, but here's a couple of shots for comparison....

The one I had back in 72 was duller I think, but my memory could just be failing. Anyway, gotta love the P&R and the wonderful trigger!

Your 28-2

Rodentman:

1)Your 28-2 is a "Beauty":what::) also! It appears to have an identical finish to mine!

2)Have you owned your 28-2 very long-because, it doesn't show a cylinder ring-nor, does it look to have been fired yet?

3)Do you like the Magna stocks better than the Target's? For myself, I dunno-as I haven't decided yet? I'm mostly referring to their appearance-because, I think the Target stocks would be better for shooting.

I was happy to get it with original stocks, either way.

It was sold to me "as new in box." The cleaning brush showed some dirt, so I think it had been fired, but not much. I fire it some, but not a lot. Hate to call it a safe queen but I don't want to beat it up.

I also always seem to have some new load for a different caliber to test. Right now I am working on 10mm's. I don't know what will be next. I never do.

To the OP: WOW! Nice find. My first centerfire was a Model 28 Highway Patrolman 6". I still remember the day I bought it. It was at a Big-5 sporting goods store in Orange County, CA, back in the day when they sold handguns. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to have it. One of those guns that nagged at me for days, and I ended up shifting funds from here to there to be able to pay for it.

I went back a few days later only to find a burly biker looking at it at the counter. He said he'd come back on payday. So, after he left I asked to see the gun and purchased it immediately. It was going to become a big brother to my Model-18 .22 LR.

In those days (1980 something) the 28 was marketed as a weapon for the sheriff or highway patrolman on a budget and sported a duller blue finish than the Model-27. These days, that austere finish on the Model-28 looks like deep blue beauty compared to newer blued gun.

The sight of an old well preserved 28 strikes a chord with me. It was also the gun that got me interested in reloading. Thanks for posting it. You have a real winner there.

Ironvic:

Thanks for posting your very interesting story! I enjoyed going back in time with you, through your fond memories of your first Model 28! Those were the good old days-except, for always being too broke to enable affording nice guns like an Model 28!

Thanks also for your compliment on my Model 28-2!
