This morning I took my 12 year old niece out to the range so that she could shoot a gun for the first time. She is visiting us for a few days with my mom (her grandmother). She would have never got to do this at home, as her mom is incredibly protective and strongly anti-anything “dangerous”.
She did great and had a good time. We started off in the backyard with a BB gun on Saturday. Today she shot a Marlin 60 .22LR at steel plates at 30 and 60 meters, and did pretty well. Hopefully she learned that guns are not inherently dangerous, and can be safely used responsibly.
Between the shooting and the ATV riding we did yesterday, I’m sure that I will be on my sister’s ***** list, but I’m willing to do that if it helps bring firearms awareness to someone that could very well have grown up thinking that guns are bad and dangerous.

Some may disagree, but I for one salute you on taking the initiative with your niece. She's at an impressionable age and your time with her on the range may change her outlook on guns for the rest of her life. Hopefully, your sister will get over it.......

I'll echo what wishin said so perfectly!

I did the same kind of thing with my #1 grandson last August. Started him on the 50 yd. rimfire range at my club with my Marlin 60. Like me, he's left handed so the 60 was perfect for him if a bit on the longish side (he was 9 at the time).

He had the time of his life and I carefully monitored his every move and drilled him with way more firearm safety isssues than he could comprehend.

He was VERY proud of his bulls eyes and took his target home to show his mother (my overprotective daughter).

I gave him my CO2 pellet rifle to take back to NH as well.

His mother was not pleased-at first-until I reminded her that I got HER a BB gun and taught her to shoot at the very same age.

Now, mom and grandson shoot targets on hay bales in their back yard.

I couldn't be more pleased with myself. :D
