This morning I took my 12 year old niece out to the range so that she could shoot a gun for the first time. She is visiting us for a few days with my mom (her grandmother). She would have never got to do this at home, as her mom is incredibly protective and strongly anti-anything “dangerous”.
She did great and had a good time. We started off in the backyard with a BB gun on Saturday. Today she shot a Marlin 60 .22LR at steel plates at 30 and 60 meters, and did pretty well. Hopefully she learned that guns are not inherently dangerous, and can be safely used responsibly.
Between the shooting and the ATV riding we did yesterday, I’m sure that I will be on my sister’s ***** list, but I’m willing to do that if it helps bring firearms awareness to someone that could very well have grown up thinking that guns are bad and dangerous.
