I see he has Mk III firing pins and recoil plates. We are assured that a broken firing pin could only be replaced at the factory, so what is one supposed to do with these parts?

Well, Colt (and some gunsmiths) may still have the special tools needed, but you would likely need to send them the parts with the gun.
