I was finally able to take my first Northern Maine buck on Wednesday. This was a special hunt for my because it was the first deer I've taken while hunting with my grandfather, who is a spry 93 years old. He sticks mostly to the truck and sits at the crossings he's familiar with while I get out and still hunt and sit. For decades, it's been a tradition to travel north to my grandparents' house and hunt the week of Thanksgiving. Time, age, and responsibility has slowed us all down a bit over the years, but we still put our time and energy into hunting the big woods of Northern Maine.

My Marlin Guide Gun made quick work of this deer with a neck shot at 30 yards. While I'm not convinced it wasn't merely a coincidence, this buck responded to a grunt call and came right out on top of me. I had seen him run from the tote road I was walking and while I didn't have time to get a shot, I blew the grunt, which turned him around and brought him right back. Not the biggest buck in the world but I'm dang proud of it!

Thanks! It's a 45-70. This was a factory Remington 405 gr. Love that round!

:D Nice job . I see that you really have to use good camo on those Mule Deer .

JeffDilla:

Congratulations! Great looking rifle set-up, and a great deer. The .45-70 Gov't. Still an effective round.

Thanks, guys.

Geno: This rifle setup is my go-to for hunting in Maine. The areas I hunt are thick and the 45-70 is a great brush-buster. I keep the scope on 1x while still hunting and usually bump it up to 2x if I'm in my stand. This deer didn't take another step after the neck shot!
