I'm in the market for a .45 carbine.. My wife would just love it if I brought home a 'Tommy Gun', but they seem a bit pricey... the USC seems to run about the same range...

Are the new semi-auto Thompson reliable? I like that I can get 30rd magazines for them (at least some models), that doesn't seem to be an option for the USC.

Any other opinions on these two? (of course not, nobody here opines ;)

Well, that's neither.. by the time you've paid for a 1911 and the conversion, ya might as well buy a whole carbine ;-).

On the other hand, hmm.. perhaps that'd give me an excuse to get a 10MM 1911, or a Glock for that matter..been thinking about a G29 anyway.

You can do a magwell conversion of the USC and it will take 30 round Grease Gun mags. I did it with mine. Works flawlessly. M3 mags cost $10 each. It only takes a few to pay for the cost of the conversion kit, as opposed to 10 round HK USC mags.

So I'm browsing around looking for this conversion, and stumble on to several sites that talk about a HK USC M3, and then this site selling HK USC M3 mags tactical-weapons

Someone else on gunsamerica claiming the USC can't be imported anymore?

So what's the deal? Are they making them already setup for the M3 mags or is the M3 mag in above link have an adapter on it (kinda looks that way).

I know at least one store that has a USC here.. but are they gonna dry up?

It is not an importation problem. HK has simply discontinued both the USC and SL8-1. If you decide you want one, don't wait too long. They ain't makin' no mo'

They do not come from HK with the conversion, but several companies will do the conversion for you (and dye it black if you want).

The mag in the link is just a plain ol' M3 mag. The mags are not changed, the lower receiver is changed. If you look around, you can do better than $14 each.

This rifle is a lot of fun.

Fairly accurate. About 2.5 to 3 inches at 50 yards with lead reloads.
It will only feed RN or JHP close to RN.
I read that the early Kahr Thompsons had problems but I think they got any problems solved.
It was about $830 at a Dallas gun show.

Since the picture was taken, I made a Red Dot mount in place of the rear sight. A couple screws and the sights are changed.

Ya I know, a Red Dot sight in a Thompson is like VW fenders on a sports car but my eyes need a little help.

I've found new orginal 30 round mags at the GS for $18. 20 rounders are hard to get.
The M1 will only use stick mags.

Unless there's nostalgia involved, there's NO contest... The HK feels like a TOY. The weight is just non-existent. When you pick up a "Tommy gun", you know you're holding something!

It's just my PERSONAL, unsubstantiated belief that HK discontinued the SL-8 and USC because of the POSSIBILITY of offering the G36 and UMP in semi-auto versions by next year...

One can hope anyway :D

No Nate, I don't plan on doing anything with it.

If it isn't full auto, it isn't a "Thompson", know what I mean?

It's just a cool looking fun rifle. :)

I've even gotten used to the 16 inch barrel to the point the short barrel looks strange.

Ack, after discussing with my wife.. now she wants a Beretta CX4 Storm, which leaves me enough money for a Glock or something...

Mech-tech is supposed to have the CCU's for Beretta92/Taurus PT92 later this year, so I'll probably have to go with that..

now off to the beretta forums to check out the details on the Storm ;-)

glocknsail,

The Storm looks good.
It could be one of my next guns but I think I want to wait for a 40 S&W. I've got a lot of 40 cal to burn.

There's been good reports on it.

If the Thompson was for your wife she might not be happy with the weight. That thing is heavy.
