Those of you that have shot or owned a lot of different handguns, which are best?

Mod 64 Smith, easiest to shoot. Ruger 7" Blackhawk best .44. Ruger .45 Vaquero, sweetest overall shooter. Smith .500 8", hairiest. .500 4", weirdest. Glock 17, fastest. SA 1911, most frustrating.

My favorites have been HKs. They have been extremely accurate and 100% reliable. The USP .45 Compact and P7M8 have been my favorites.

I've owned lots of handguns over the years.

Amongst the best:
- Any of my Berettas...and I own a bunch of them. Whether it's one of my 92-series (or my Cougar L) 9mm's, my sole 96FS Centurion .40 S&W or my only .45 ACP Beretta, a MiniCougar 8045D, they are exceptional handguns....very resistant to malfunctions (although a few did choke the first time out of the box when new....rectified after a good cleaning), accurate and with quality parts out there for them (not as many though as a 1911 and/or Glock though).

- My CZ-40b .40 S&W has earned a place in my heart....reliable (no malfs so far in hundreds of rounds fired) and accurate....I just wish the gun was still being manufactured, the rear sight notch was a little wider for us people with tired eyes, and the manual safety was slightly larger and worked while the gun is in DA mode.

- I absolutely love my Kahr P9 Covert and PM9. The Covert is superbly accurate (I managed a 296 out of 300 during my last agency qualification couse outshooting my Sig P229) as is the PM9. Both are amongst the most concealable defensive handguns available and fire an effective round in the 9mm. Negatives...some PM9's have given some owners hiccups (they NEED at least 200 high quality rounds fired through them to break the guns in) and they aren't cheap...but quality never is....ask any H&K gun owner. These two Kahrs are my primary off-duty carry guns...one "resides" in an IWB and the other in a kydex pocket holster when I am off duty.

Other great guns I own include:
- My S&W 1066 10mm (oh why oh why did S&W turn their back on their 10xx series and the 10mm cartridge in general?)....my 1066 has never had a problem and it can fire REAL 10mm rounds like anything by Doubletap Ammo all day long.

- One of my Steyr S40 .40 S&W....a really nice little gun by some of the guys who brought you the Glock....what I like that it's small, has excellent sights in Steyr's radical "trapezoid/triangle" sights, it's a polymer gun WITH A MANUAL SAFETY (!!!....I like that!!!), the bore axis is lower than even a Glock and they were inexpensive when CDNN had them for sale (I'm glad I bought two of them!)

1. Glock 26, 27/33, 30, 19, 23
2. All 1911 single stack .45s
3. Sig SP2340
4. Sig P239
5. S&W 629 & 686 revolvers
6. Kahr PM9 (recently produced versions)

Well, anyone who has read my posts with any regularity will now that I am a big fan of both Taurus and Ruger. The Taurus 24/7 is a fantastic bargain, provided you are looking for a DA auto. I love my Ruger P90 and my MkII, and from waht I have shot from the other P-Series pistols, they seem great too. Both companies price well within the average guys budget, so thats nice. Now, if budget wasn't an issue, there are a few guns that I would own (although I would still own that P90) and here they are:

.357 - Python. In my opinion, the Python is overall (fit, finish, accuracy, reliability) the finest gun Colt ever produced, even if you consider the 1911. Unfortunatly, the used prices seem to bear this out, as they are through the freaking roof.

.45 - Though I will stick by my Ruger through thick and thin, I have always wanted to build my own 1911. Probably wouldn't be the best gun ever, but it would be the best gun to me, so there.

9mm - Well, I enjoy shooting this caliber, even though I don't have much faith in it as a combat round, but if I had to choose one gun that I have always wanted, I want a Beretta 92f. Mostly, this is because I shot one in the USMC. I actually have a Taurus copy of this gun, and I enjoy shooting it quite a bit, but I would like to have "Beretta" stamped on the side. Again, there are probably better 9mm pistols out there, but for me, this one will do just fine.

.38 Special - Actually, I probably will end up with this gun at some point, as my Dad has it, and I think he will probably end up gifting it to me, but I shot a S&W Military and Police model built way back when, and I have to say, I really liked it. Absolutly fantastic for fun shooting, has a good deal of history behind it, and is just plain cool, in my opinion.

The rest of the guns I would like to own are sort of theoretical, meaning that I would like to own them, but chances are slim that I ever will just because I can't see actually spending the money on them, regardless of my finances at the time. First on that list is a S&W 500, followed by a custom shop Smith .357, followed by a Rohrbaugh, followed by a particularly fine Colt SAA.

By the way, I own a H&R Sportsman 999, and I absolutely love this little revolver, and it is by far and away my favorite .22 revolver I have ever shot. They aren't made anymore, and in some past posts, a few guys have indicated that they are more than a bit scarce, but if you happen to run across one and its in good shape and the price is right, I very highly recommend it.

.45 - Though I will stick by my Ruger through thick and thin, I have always wanted to build my own 1911.

Do it! :)

Years ago I got an Essex frame uber-cheap. Like $30 or so. So over the next year or two, when I found a cheap GI part, I'd buy it. Gun cost $100 or a bit less, and works great.

Soooooo fun putting it together. Made me really appreciate the 1911. As far as I remember it never failed to function. :D

The best in no order in particular:

S&W 4" Model 28 (.357)
Glock 26 (9mm)
Colt 1911 Gold Cup (.45acp)
S&W 4" Model 19 (.357)
Glock 21 (.45acp)

Honerable mention goes to:

Steyr M9 (9mm) Probably the most underrated "wondernine" out there.
Colt Commander (.45acp)

Owned many of them.

Sig 226 9mm (Mercedes of 9mm handguns)

S&W model 41 22LR (you aim, shoot, you hit what more should you look for in a pistol)

The following have all been 100% right from the box. Every Sig I own. Every S&W auto I've every owned. Every Ruger auto or revolver I've ever owned. My H&K. My CZ75. My Beretta 96G Elite. Taurus PT92. Probably others but these I trust my lif to 100%.

I like the Browning High Powers, currently have two in 40 S&W and two in 9mm. Among other higher end pistols I also like the Sigs, especially the P220, and Briley and Wilson put together good pistols. I had the opportunity to shoot a Springfield loaded a while back as well as a S&W Scandium frame .45 and they were good also, but I don't have extensive experience with them.

Great value for the money pistols include the EAA Witness line manufactured by Tanfoglio and the CZ-75 (both can be carried cocked and locked or DA on first shot).

Just because I didn't mention a particular pistol doesn't mean it's bad, just that I don't have a lot of experience with them. However I don't like any DAO pistols, safe actions etc., just a personal preference as I grew up with single action pistols and that's what I'm used to. Others are free to love them.
