Like most of you it is difficult for me to walk by a pistol display case and not stop to add to my wish list. I went into Bass Pro and asked the gentleman what brands they carried in sub compact. My main use for this pistol would be for concealed carry. I was surprised to hear him say that they carried nothing under a 3.5 inch barrel. He did not agree with this edict but it came down from "Corporate". So I decided to take a short run over to Gander Mountain and continue my search for a "CC" pistol.I arrived at the pistol display case just in time to hear a customer ask a clerk (in a rather disturbed tone) "What happened to your pistol prices??" (While looking over a Glock) The clerk informed him that they spent most of the night remarking the price tags; and that the average increase was 75 dollars.This mandate came from "Corporate" With their rational being that their was no competition in the area: so lets raise the prices.So as I turned to Exit the store I thought ..."Thank God For GunBroker." I Just Thought I Would Pass This Along...

Sucks, b/c they're prices are the cheapest in the area (and by cheapest, I mean they sell at MSRP, instead of $50-$600 over)

And yes, I said $600, like the FN-2000 bullpup rifle for $2600 ($600 higher than CDNN) or the SIG GSR stainless 1911 for $1300 (at least $500 more expensive than everywhere else I've seen

My local gun store had the FN-2000 for $3000! I bought mine through an FN forum for $1800 & had it transferred to that store.

actually Gander "corporate" is right, they have no competition...

the average person that will buy a gun from them is either unaware of or too lazy to use the likes of Gunbroker, or in some cases they can't be bothered to even take the time to look into local "real" gun stores.

Interesting. My FFL refuses to do transfers from CDNN and other wholesalers as he states that it cuts into his profit margin. Fair enough, everyone has bills to pay and make some cash. I asked if he could order it from them instead and he's more than happy to do so. This guy normally charges 15 bucks for an FFL transfer, so he would lose money on just transferring it. I can understand it.

Gander Mountain sucks.

I was in there a couple of weeks ago and everything was WAY overpriced. Even more so than they use to be a couple years ago.

They sell certified used SIG's for the same price I can get a NIB elsewhere. Even their ammo was $2 a box more for 20 .223 than the neighborgood gun store, which in itself was even a little high.

I shook my head and walked out in disgust. Waste of time. Too bad, too - I in the past had purchased two handguns for reasonable prices (a little high, not too bad) a couple years back.

Those people are becoming rarer and rarer, as are the people who are simply not internet savvy. Eventually, storefronts are either going to have to wise up and become more competitive, or they're going to go out of business. There is no such thing as "no competition" anymore. It doesn't matter if your the only game in town, or in the next four towns, so long as those places all have an internet hookup.

Probably the same reason they don't stock ARs or other non-Fudd items. The Bass Pro that just opened out here is garbage as far as I am concerned...not including the fishing departments of course. Their firearm selection is nothing special, the prices are more than even some of the small local shops, who cares about their "gun room" or whatever they call it, their cleaning supply section actually has a great selection - but its only the bare necessities, and their reloading selection is smaller than anything I have seen in the valley from a superstore.

I'm not sure why they don't stock anything with less than a 3.5 inch barrel, but I do know that several years ago Bass Pro stopped carrying any handgun at all in order to be more PC. I live in the hometown of the Bass Pro HQ and I wrote them and told them that I thought it was a darn shame that they would give in to the pressure. So, I all but quit going to the store here. Well, lo and behold Missouri passed a concealed carry law a few years ago and I happen to notice that BP is carrying handguns again. I am not sure if the two are related, but I'm glad that they are carrying something. I just bought an XD9 on sale and with a new credit card discount paid $435 plus tax. So, their prices are right in line with most of the dealers around here. Sorry to hear there are such bad people to deal with out there.

I noticed a nice handgun selection but no snubbies or other CCW-sized guns, so I asked the knowledgeable counter person why.

He told me, "Bass was started by a fisherman and he feels that selling concealable handguns is not the kind of image the company wishes to attract.

I replied, "I'm a CCW permit holder, so I guess he means law-abiding citizens like ME!" It turned out the knowledgeable counterperson was a retired Captain in the local Sheriff's Department. He agreed that folks like me were not a problem but, his boss is the boss. GREAT ANSWER, BTW!

I also noticed no small handgun sized holsters either.

Bass is a fine shop. Too bad they don't carry what I'm looking for!

BTW, the retired captain took the time to write down the names of four local gun shops that could meet my CCW needs. Nice guy . . . who really knows his stuff and presents his employer in a positive way.

I enjoyed hearing his take on the best .45ACP ammo today, based on tests his department made.

My kind of guy! Bass is blessed to have his services.

I am just surprized that the biggies who would drive the small guys from the field showed their hand before they had eliminated the competition entirely.

I'm gunna agree with the support the local guys. i would laugh in the face of a store that wanted MSRP for a gun. pretty standard that 4/5ths of that is what the asking price will be, sometimes closer to 3/4. good thing too, i can barely buy at these prices.

I grew up in Springfield, Missouri, and remember when Bass Pro was ONE outdoors store. Johnny Morris started the place selling boats and outdoor gear to folks who liked to spend their weekends down on Table Rock Lake or Taneycomo. The Bass Pro business has grown a bit since then, of course. But people who said "it's about fishing" are largely correct. The Springfield store has the largest bass boat business in the country. (Hence, BASS Pro ) They do carry stuff for hunters, as they also carry women's clothing, men's clothing. kids' toys, soccer balls, etc. But yeah, their foundation is in fishing and boating.

So what if they don't want to carry concealed weapons firearms? There are lots of other options. Academy doesn't have much of a selection usually either; but if you want anything related to your kid's Pop Warner Football team, they have you covered.

I would love to...if their prices weren't so darn high!

Thats why I frequent my not-so-local 45-minute-drive-gunshop, where their prices are competitive with anyone in the nation...Not to mention both local shop owners are condescending A-holes who think they know everything, but actually know little.

Gander Mountain sucks big time. They were (still are up to at least two weeks ago) selling Five-seveNs in Geneva, IL for $1199. Bought mine for $929 at G.A.T. Guns. You have to be pretty stupid to buy from them. They price like they are the only sellers in the area, and they are FAR from the only sellers in Northern Illinois. We may have tough gun laws, but the area is home to 9.5 million people and we have a very good selection of gun stores (and everything else).

I looked at .223 there too and the least expensive box was nearly $9. I can still get it for like $6.50 at Farm And Fleet in DeKalb - and I did, 20 boxes.

We just got a Cabela's out here in Hoffman Estates. I like the Cabela's, far better than the Bass Pro shop. They have a very good general selection, the best selection of fancy over/unders in the area, and reasonable prices. They stock snubbies and AR-15s. They have a nice selection of accessories - holsters, snap caps, etc. I rate G.A.T. and MegaSports at being better than Cabela's as far as guns and firearms accessories go, but visiting Cabela's is really neat - it's half a store and half a theme park. Gander Mountain gets the bottom rank on the list, although I have found a few bargains there in past years. Gander just seems to price guns randomly. Bass Pro Shops has a nice resturant.

I just talked to my FFL the other day when picking up a rifle from him. We have a GM opening here(actually it might have opened today) and he said that for 6 or so months they are going to have awesome prices on all of their firearms to try and run out the 2 local shops, and then jack up the prices like all of the others.

Hearing all of this about GM jacking up prices...

I guess the one i go to (i like the Guide series clothing, when on sale), must be one of the exceptions where there was no way they were driving out the nearest local shop. b/c their prices on most guns are still sane.

now anything that even hints of EBR is jacked up and so are the "pistols that the general public (as opposed to "gunnies") thinks are cool" i.e. glocks, kimbers, Berretta 92s, etc. and gun prices in the greater houston area aren't exactly great to begin with. but otherwise after 3 years or so they're still fairly well in line with "local Normal" prices.

with one exception (noted Here) the service in the Gun Dept has always been lacking when i was there, including an incident that resulted in me telling a clerk "Alright [name withheld], it's obvious from the amount, placement, and size of the rust spots, that YOU put my rifle in lay-away without wiping your paw prints off of it first, get me your manger NOW!!!"

I haven't been in recently, but my local Gander Mountain wasn't too bad...

Except for the one guy (clerk) that was trying to pass off a Century Arms M1 as a Springfield..."Century is a division of Springfield....H&R, Winchester and International Harvester NEVER made M1's.." When I opened the action, the Op-Rod jumped off the bolt..."You clumsy Oaf, you broke this rifle..."

"OK, dude, show me where it says "Springfield Armory" on this rifle, RIGHT NOW!!! Perhaps the ATF folks would like to know why you are trying to perpetrate a fraudulent sale with a mis-marked rifle."

Dude & rifle(?) both disappeared into ther back...haven't seen either since.
