Thoughts on CCW rotation.

I rotate based on weather & amount of clothing worn. The common denominator is that none of the guns have any type of external safety to fumble with or get used to.

Hey if it works for you who am I to say don't?

Any firearm can fail. None of them have perfect reliability no matter how hard any of them try or claim. But that is a different thread and debate.

Back on the subject, I believe the argument against manual safeties is a cop out. Do different guns have different triggers? Yes. Even in a company like Glock that supposedly uses the same trigger in every model, there are variances. Can you still hit the target with a different trigger on a different gun? Probably, if you practice a little.

I ran a gun fighter course and range just before I got out of the military. Many composed of new privates who never did gun fighter at basic training or AIT. In just a few hours, manipulating the safety on a dry weapon, they could swipe the safety off as they brought the rifle up, and swipe it back on bringing the weapon back down. Competency with your firearm means you aren't going to "forget" to take the safety off when you need it. The good thing is, you don't need to visit the range to practice taking off a safety. Unload your firearm, Watch TV, walk around your living room and practice draws and dry fires. No ammo needed and cheap.

I used to rotate guns based on my dress, and thus the weather. But then I found a gun that worked for me year round, and I stuck with it.

I try to be consistent with my open carry guns now too.

I'm starting to wonder why I have so many guns.

I used to wonder that.. now i just wonder what my next firearm purchase will be... :D

It almost seems like we're debating to separate issues, rotating carry guns and whether or not your gun should have a safety.

I can't really say I don't "rotate" what I carry because I do switch off between 2 guns but the two guns I switch between are as similar as I can make them; an M&P Shield and an M&P full size 9.

I switch based solely on my wardrobe. If I can conceal the FS I carry it. If I can't I carry the shield.

I have had to draw a firearm 2 times in self defense (no shots fired). Both times I experience the adrenaline dump, the tunnel vision, the roaring in my ears, the tachypsychia, and everything else that went with it.

If I'm ever in that situation again where the real potential to lose my life exists I want to do everything I can to mitigate that risk and I am absolutely convinced that any variable that I can remove from the equation will help me to do that.

Along the same lines I choose not to carry a gun with a manual safety because I've forgot to disengage a safety just plinking on the square range under no pressure and if I can do it there the potential exists for me to do it when it could cost me my life.

If there's no safety to forget to manipulate manipulate the potential that I will forget to manipulate it is nil.

Keep It Simple Stupid

I think it is prudent to carry a handgun with very similar if not identical manual of arms. Of course in the winter it is easier to carry a bigger gun.

Myself personally I wouldn't want to switch from a 1911 to a revolver to a glock.

To each his own.

I switch from 1911s to SIGs and M&Ps on a regular basis. I've not had the occasion to worry about wasting a split-second swiping off a thumb safety that wasn't there.

What about not swiping a safety that was?

Eh, fair question ... since I came up on 1911s, my habit is a downward swipe as I draw the pistol; just second nature now for forty years or so. Always been acutely aware of the operating system for whatever pistol I've carried, anyway.
