I know its a bit taboo and can kill resale value, but I recently bought a 1979 Colt Gold Cup National Match born on my birth date in 1979. Gun is in good overall condition and has all orginial parts, but obviously has some wear on the bluing since it has been shot.

I am giving serious thought to sendin git to Colt and having them Royal Blue the entire gun. Ever since I started seeing Pythons and the Talo National Match from a few years back, I have been in love with that finish.

Any thoughts from you wise folks out there?

Thanks

MC

Colt refinishing 1911

I had colt refinish the slide of a 1911 that had some superficial rust pits from a prior owner. They did a great job on it and clearly take considerable pride in their work. Highly recommended. The Royal Blue finish is great.

That's kinda what I hoped to hear. If this gun shoots well, I doubt I'll ever get rid of it so resale value isn't a giant concern.

Having Colt do it wont hurt resale value of a 70s Goldcup, may not help much but it wont hurt.

Go for it and keep the Colt re-blue paperwork in case of a future sale - though it appears unlikely given the particulars.

I have an 80 series Officer, it was getting alot of wear in the Parkerized finished. I duracoated it and love it. It is not about value for that pistol. I will never part with it. It was a gift from a very close family member. I have thought about sending it to Colt to have a royal blue finish put on it, but not until the duracoat wears. I know people say its taboo, but the bottom line, is it is YOUR gun, not theirs. Do what makes you happy.

If one were to refinish a very old and rare collectible it would have a negative impact on the worth of the firearm but to refinish your Colt GCNM is merely a personal decision. Please be aware that the lead time for sending to Colt and receiving back from Colt can be many months in some instances. Good luck with your decision.

JohnBT,

"THAT" piece is a beautiful example of knowing what you're doing! If I were to ever own a 1911, that finish is what I'd have on mine, bar none. Then it would match my Python!
