Hello everyone,

I'm thinking of getting a Mossberg MVP in 5.56 for precision plinking and target shooting. Mostly for just having fun from 200-500 yards. I'm trying to decide between the Varmint and Predator models. I really like the laminated gray wood stock, and I've handled both and like both so it's a tough decision. I already have many ARs but nothing over 16 inches, so the MVP would be for longer range shooting and I think the Varmint model would net me the most velocity out of my ammo for reaching out. On the other hand the Predator model is lighter and handier but I won't be carrying it much or hunting so the weight and length doesn't really matter.

Has anyone shot both and can compare them? Velocity differences aside, is one more accurate than the other? I also see that they have 1/9 twist barrels, has anyone shot 77-grain ammo out of them at long range and what were the results?

For target shooting it's tough to beat a heavy barrel. I have a few varmint model rifles that I use for groundhogs. They aren't something I would want to carry all day but I still carry them and I'm 68 years old. I'm more of a hunter who will sit and wait for game so I'm fine with the weight.

I used to own a Savage 10fp in .223 with a 24" 1:9 twist. Never shot the 77 gr ammo but it sure did shoot the 69 gr mk into small holes.

I have the Mossberg MVP thunder ranch version in 5.56. It has a 18.5" barrel. I have it scoped with a Horus hunter 3-12x, and it is suppressed with a gemtech G5. I exclusively fire 77 grain MK 262 (SMK bullet) or Hornady 75 grain BTHP match. With either round, it holds a solid 1 MOA group or better, with a slight zero shift when I switch rounds. I have done no modifications to the rifle, other than scoping it and installing the G5. In fact, the action has never been out of the stock. I have used this setup with the Hornady 75 grain factory load to kill 2 deer DRT. To date, I haven't fired it past 300 meters due to range limitations, and that is about as far as I would use a 5.56 on a deer anyway- not due to lack of accuracy, but due to lack of energy. Needless to say, I am pleasantly surprised by this rifle. If it matters. I am also the proud owner of a Larue OBR and an actual US Army M24 SWS, and I am a former sniper instructor, so there is the "baseline" I am working from, at least regarding my experience with accurate rifles. The only negative I have observed is that it won't function with the metal mag supplied with it, but it does great with P-mag 10 and 20 rounders. The supplied mag went into the garbage can at the range first session.

The question is moot at this point, I just put a 20-inch Predator model on layaway at a LGS, and a Vortex scope to top it off. It had a great trigger and the price was right ($399) so I just pulled the trigger, pun intended.
