I'd been wanting one of thes for a bit, then I found one at a great price sooo..here it goes!

The rifle is a Savage 93R17FVSS heavy barrel with a synthetic stock. I topped it off with a Simmons 22 Mag. 3x9. I didn’t have an arbor for my collimator small enough to fit the .17 caliber so I bore sighted it at the range at 25 yards. First shot in the X ring at 3:30 and adjusted with the next two rounds to center X ring at 25 yards.

The trigger on this rifle leaves a bit to be desired and is something I will have to fix. A lot of creep and mushy release. Not the best for shooting good groups. The stock was a tad shorter than I’m used to as well, but I made do. I might go to a heavier wood or laminate stock if possible. I had problems with the magazine as well. When inserted and held in with just the spring clip on the magazine guide, the feed ramp sits just a hair too low. I had to push up slightly while working the bolt to get proper feeding, so it's an angle problem. (I’ve since fixed the problem with the judicious application of a brass hammer to the magazine guide.)

From 25 yards I moved it out to 50 yards. The groups didn’t expand more than 1/8 of inch and were an inch high. Remember all this is from a sandbag on a rifle rest on a bench. I lowered the group to dead center again and moved it out to 100 yards. Unfortunately the local range here in Miami doesn’t have the option of 75 yards and I left my range finder at home.

At 100 yards I found the little .17 cal spitzers hollow points (CCI were the only ones available.) were very wind sensitive, but then the bullet weighs as much as a paper clip. There was some drift but for the most part they all stayed within the 8 ring with most in the X to 9 rings. I feel it was mostly trigger at this point. I also found the cross hairs on the scope to be just a tad too wide for really accurate shooting. See pic below.

From there I moved it back to 50 yards to play with it and shot the second group pictured below. No too shabby considering the nasty trigger.

All in all, the rifle was fun despite the listed drawbacks. Recoil is NON-existent. It was like dry firing with a pop. Even air rifles kick more than this rifle does. Looks like I do have a call to Savage to look forward to in the future! (I have since ordered a laminate stock and a Rifle Basix trigger sear, I post more once they come in. I also plan to run the test again with the Hornady V-Max rounds.)

I just picked up a savage in .17HMR, and was searching to see what others thought of them. Has your new stock and trigger come in yet? What do you think of them? I almost went with a marlin because of the easy trigger mod for them.

I've given the caliber many thoughts but just can't think of a legitimate use for it for myself. I'm way past that "I've got to have it because it's new" time in my life.

I don't hunt varmints any longer and can't see the use for a "plinker" at nearly $10.00 per 50 for a round that I can't reload.

I spoke with a guy at my gun club the other day that said he bought one of the new Ruger Single-Six's in .17 HMR. He said it shot real well, no recoil. He didn't have it with him that day so I couldn't see it.

I asked him what he used it for other than "plinking" and he said...nothin' and then complained about the cost of ammo. His last range session he burned up 150 rds. on nothin' but the backstop.

I had been considering the Winchester 9417 Legacy. Looks like a neat rifle.

I have joined the .17 HMR club after a great deal of scepticism when it first came out.

I bought an Anschutz 1517D and mounted a simmons proair 4-12x44 scope on it. .30 inch 5 shot groups at 50 yards with my harris bipod all day. When I am on .15 inch 5 shot groups are no problem.

At the 100 yard range same story .15-.30 5 shot groups, and the zero at 100 yards is the same as at 50 yards.

I also bought a 16.25" barrel for my TC contender and I get similar results with it. The speer hollow points shoot a little better than the remmington and hornady polimer tips for me. Thats good, because my local Dicks sells boxes of 50 speers for $6.99. The ammo is not all that expensive when you compare it to match grade .22lr which is similar in price and accuracy
(at 50 yards). The .17 HMR uses a real jacketed rifle bullet which is precise match grade and expensive to manufacture compared to a swaged .22lr bullet.

The .17 goes 2600 FPS, I have not noticed any wind problem at 100 yards last time I was shooting in about a 10-15 MPH cross wind and the bullets were dead on at 100 yards, I'm sure you would see some deflection at 200 yards.

I think that the .17 will eventually replace the .22lr in serious competition (especially the HM2)
Because it is inherrently more accurate, It will be interesting to see the .17 HM2 ( a .22 lr case necked down instead of .22 mag case 2000 fps) when it comes out this fall. Eventually the price of ammo will come down more.

If I handload centerfire ammo in .308 it costs $17 per hundred for the bullets alone $12 per hundred for accurate .223 bullets.

Hunting varmints???? Look here http://www.varmintal.net/17hmr.htm

I am very impressed with the .17HMR.

...at nearly $10.00 per 50 for a round that I can't reload.
The shop here I frequent sells Winchester USA .223 (or Winchester Q3131A 5.56) 55gr at $4.00 for a 20 pack. That's $8/40 rounds, or I can get a case of 1000 for $185 (+ 5% = $194.25/1000, $3.89/20 OTD)

They sell the Hornady .17HMR for $8/50 rounds.

They sell Wolf .45ACP for $8/50. At Wal-Mart I can get Blazer .45 for $10/50, or Winchester .45 $20/100.

These are the best prices I've found locally for this ammo, and actually the .223 is cheaper than online. I know, I know...I should start reloading. BUT, until I do, it seems all my guns cost about the same per round to shoot. The only ones that are cheaper are my SKS shooting Wolf, or my .22LR with valuepacks. And frankly, I don't shoot those as often.

In conclusion: for me, it doesn't seem that expensive. Yes, moreso than .22LR. But not bad enough to stop me from getting one.

Yes indeed I got the new stock and trigger. I have to say I am VERY happy with the changes in the rifle!

After installing the Rifle Basix trigger sear the initial trigger pull was a crisp 2.25 lbs. After shooting it for a 100 rds or so it settled in at an even 2 lbs. Still very crisp and clean.

For me, getting the larger laminated stock made a big difference. It doesn't feel like a toy now. Made shooting the rifle a pure joy! It has to rank as one of my favorites now.

The magazine problem was solved with a judicious application of a brass mallet, a couple of taps and everything lines up now! The only thing I had to do when installing the new stock was do a little filing on the magazine well plate. It was just a hair off and too close to the old screw hole to drill another one. Works fine now.

I am very happy with this rifle now, I haven't been able to take it to the range for a paper test but with informal shooting it's been comfortable and very accurate in off hand shooting. Thumbs up!

I bought some Hornady .17 HMR for $7.50/50 about a month ago at a gun show. The price is definitely coming down. However, at the very same show, the same ammo was being sold for $10.50/50. You have to shop around, even in the same building!

I think a .17HMR is going to be one of my next purchases. Last time I was at the range there was a guy there zeroing his on the 50 yard range, after he got it where he wanted it he shot the tacks out of his target lol. That made me decide I had to have one :D I imagine with how popular it is now that the ammo prices may start to come down a bit. Hopefully some more manufacturers start making it also, it seems all I have really seen is Hornady and CCI

...a 500 rds CASE shipped!
Round these parts, we call 'em "bricks" when you're talking about rimfire. :p

Thanks for the followup Oller...I just got the gun saturday, and was already thinking of trading it in (for a CZ, Kimber, or similar)...but maybe now I'll hold onto it for a bit. :D BTW, where did you get the stock and trigger, and if you don't mind, how much did you pay for them?

The stock and attendant parts I got directly from Savage parts dept. They recomended the Rifle Basix trigger sear and provided the number.

Rifle Basix doesn't deal with Credit Cards or Paypal. They just sent the part with an invoice and I sent them a check. Hard to find trust like that in todays world.

The stock ran around $140 and the sear was $85. Well worth it for the results I got. Man did I hate that old trirgger!:cuss:

Yeah around here we call them bricks too!;) Just copied it off the flyer they sent without thinking....

....I asked him what he used it for other than "plinking" and he said...nothin' and then complained about the cost of ammo. His last range session he burned up 150 rds. on nothin' but the backstop....
-Ah,,,, well then--if you only bought guns you needed, what would you have? A .50 D-Eagle, a Barret 50 BMG, maybe a 12- or 10-gauge shotgun, and that's all. After all, you can shoot a small animal with a large gun, but not the other way around, right? So why bother with anything less than the most powerful caliber you can possibly find in a pistol/rifle/shotgun?
.......
And let's not all get started on the subject of "wasting money", it's hard on the board server. <:D

I have the Marlin bolt action. Very accurate. I have also found that the price of .17 HMR is going down. I think it is a great little cartridge.
