Howdy, shooters;

I’m currently working to mount a scope on a new rifle, and am running into some difficulty. I have a solution of sorts, but there are a few things I’m not happy with, so I thought I’d see if any of y’all have any suggestions.

The rifle is a Savage 10 FP in .223, their 24†bull-barrel model with the new rounded rear receiver top. The scope I want to mount is a Burris Compact R/A 4-12x. So far, so good.

The problem is that I was hoping to use Burris’ “Signature†standard (i.e.: non-Weaver) rings; I really like the synthetic inserts that these rings provide, and they also come in the matte black finish so as to match the rifle and scope. The mounts I wanted to use are the “Trumount†universal two-piece bases (Burris part# 410246). The trouble with this arrangement is, with this particular optic, the scope tube isn’t long enough to adequately make the span between the two rings.

I called Burris yesterday, and their tech-fellow, Larry, told me that I need to get a set of “extension†rings, which will provide the necessary offset both front and rear. The part number he gave me is #420059, which are medium-height rings according to Burris’ own fitting charts. Because of the heavy barrel, I’m looking to get a set of high, not medium, rings, just to be on the safe side, and these rings don’t come in high. Also, two other things that don’t thrill me about this solution is that these particular rings are in a high-gloss finish (not matte), and they are not “Signature†rings, so they lack the synthetic insert.

So, what other manufacturers/mounting options are there for this rifle/scope combination? I’d appreciate any input.

Thanks,

Kreed

Does your Burris R/A scope have an adjustable objective?
You may want to reconsider the scope and do some more research on it.
I had, I repeat, had, a Burris 3-9x compact R/A on a FAL. The scope crapped out shortly after mounting it while shooting a plate match.
The reason? Come to find out, R/A stands for Rimfire and Airgun. The insides of the R/A couldn't handle the .308 recoil. POI/zero wandered and the windage adjustment seized up.
The R/A designation on the scope and box went unnoticed at time of order, pick-up, mounting, and zeroing by the dealer and me.
Your scope may or may not handle the .223 recoil from a bolt gun. Don't chance it. Get something specifically for a centerfire rifle caliber.
I replaced mine with a Burris 2-7x compact without an A/O. Works fine.

dadman,

Yes, this scope does indeed have an adjustable objective. And a quick jump over to burrisoptics.com does confirm that R/A stands for "rimfire/airgun". Hmmmm. Looks like I may have to go shopping for another scope, on top of everything else...

Because of the heavy barrel, I’m looking to get a set of high, not medium, rings, just to be on the safe side, and these rings don’t come in high.

once you get a scope for your rifle, do some measuring. you might not need high rings. different companys have different dimensions for low, med, high settings.

for example, I have a 3.8x12x44 scope mounted on my 10FPLE1 using Warne MEDIUM rings. (on a one piece base)

no need to go high if you don't have to.:D

i'm glad that you'll be swapping scopes out... the set-up you describe is a disaster, even if the scope could handle the recoil.

get a regular size scope, not a compact, for heavy barrel apps. mount the scope as low as feasible on the gun. medium rings will cover almost all your applications, unless you go w/ a big objective.

avoid those extension rings. if for no other reason, they look silly.

also, a heavy barrel does not necessarily mean you must have high rings... i have a remington vls (heavy barrel), and because the base is kind of tall (20 moa), low rings are a perfect fit w/ the 50 mm objective.

I see you solved your own problem...

BUT for excellent mounts that fit the newer Savage, and would probably have let you mount the scope where you wanted it, see Ken Farrell mounts

Edited to add:

The mounts are cheaper from Sharp Shooter Supply . Didn't catch the price before.

Thanks for the input, folks!

Well, after a bit more study and a good deal of input from y'all, it seems like there's a few ways to skin this particular cat. I've decided to go with the following:

Burris reversible extension matte black 2-piece Trumount bases (410408)

Burris matte black medium 1" standard Signature rings (420501)

Although the Burris compact 4-12x scope is an "R/A" (rimfire/airgun) model, I'm going to go ahead and put it on this Savage 10FP anyway, since the .223 isn't much of a kicker to start with, and with the weight of this rifle combined with the fact that it will be used off of a rest, I think I can get away with it. A buddy of mine actually has one of these same scopes mounted on an flattop M4gery and has put several hundred rounds through it with no problem, so what the hey.

Thanks again!

I went with the Ken Farrell base and medium Burris Signature Zee Rings with my Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x Mildot.

You can get the Ken Farrell base from Sharp Shooter Supply or Sinclair International for about $40 + shipping. Zee rings go for $25 I think on MidwayUSA. If you go with Burris Signature Zee rings, refer to this thread on Rimfire Central. One of the members sells hex screws for mounting the rings to base (Burris Zee rings use slotted screws to mount to the base). I bought a couple pair from 'tenspot' for a few bucks.

I think I can get away with it.
Kreed,
Don't do it. Wasting time. Save your money for a better scope. You may get a few hundered and one shots off and it may or may not break. Why chance it?

dadman,

I appreciate your advice. Why do it? Because I basically got the scope for free and I don't have a spare nickel right now to buy something else. $:)

With any luck, this scope will be on the rifle for break-in, and by the time I get to go shootin' again, I may just have saved enough scratch to replace it. Yes, you guessed it -- between work, home, wife and two small kids (as yet too small to take to the range!), I don't get to go shooting much!

Thanks,

Kreed
