Thinking about my hearing in a possible home defense situation, what silencer and barrel would anyone here recommend. I'm not interested in anything hokey or of substandard quality. Probably will never get one, but just curious. Might be kinda fun at the range too :D. Does it also have to go through a gun dealer after the $250 tax stamp is payed or how does that work?

Also, do silencers reduce or increase the power of the round fired? I was thinking the longer barrel would increase the power, but then maybe not since it's a silencer and not really a barrel.

Do a search to find the Gemtech and AAC websites for models. The tax stamp is $200 and yes the transfer must go through a Class III dealer, as opposed to Class I, once the paperwork is signed, submitted, and approved. The dealer holds the unit for you until you are approved for the transfer. That can take 90-180 days or even longer if BATF is busy.

To get full benefit of a suppressor in 9mm you will want to shoot a round that is sub-sonic anyway to eliminate the sonic crack. Probably the 147 gr JHP. The suppressor only addresses the the sound made from the uncontrolled rapid expansion of hot gases. In suppressed .22's I have seen a boost in velocity between having the suppressor attached or removed. The 9mm may be affected the same way. Of course this is with the more modern wipeless suppressors.

Oh darn, I forgot about the sonic boom. I don't wanna shoot 147gr. And for the price of one of those suppressors and tax stamps, I could get a couple more Hi-Powers. I guess that nixes that. :(

I wish the my idiot next door neighbor would get a sound suppressor for his fricken lawn mower outside my window. Takes him 3 hours to mow that tiny lawn. :(

:D
