Fellow shooters,
I have always loved using a thumbhole grip with my rifles. I have seen exactly one made for one of the most popular shotguns out there (Mossberg 500) and it got me wondering. My 500 kicks like nothing else I have fired (I only shoot sabots out of it, and I haven't fired it since I cut down the stock a little, also the largest rifle I have fired is my friends mosin nagent <SP?>). Is the reason there are so few options out there besides custom made stocks so obvious that I am missing it? Would you recommend using a thumbhole stock on a 12ga shooting sabots? The only stock I have seen out there is for the mossberg 500a, 12ga and it's from mossberg, and it's synthetic. I have a short pull, so this one probably won't work as I had to cut the factory stock from my 500 down .5 inches.

I for one would NOT recommend a thumbhole shotgun. Have you shot a pistol grip shotgun? Your wrist feels it.

now image the shotguns force being jammed against your thumb... I wouldn't want to shoot it.

Just my opinion of course.

I have a speedfield pistol grip built into a regular stock, it is good to turkey hunt with, you can point in and hold it steady and also take some of the recoil from your shoulder. I never shot one on a shotgun, have one on my 30-06 and love it. Mac

Way back in about '85 the local pawn shop got a winchester semi-auto 12ga in that had a custom thumbhole stock. A prettier piece of wood I don't think I had ever seen. I just had to have it so I put some money down and every week I'd hand over my lawn mowing cash until it was mine. I took it out once. That thumbhole just battered my thumb something fierce. Probably didn't help that the stock had been made for someone with about 6 more inches of arm than I had. My uncle bought the gun from me, but he switched out the stock with a factory stock.

So wait...

You're using it as a rifle?

Hell, set it up how you want a rifle.

To use it as a shotgun, no way. But to use it as a rifle, why not?

Just watch for the recoil and do wrist strengthening exercises.

Are you talking about a pistol-grip shotgun, or a true thumbhole stocked shotgun? A pistol-grip-only shotgun is practically useless for everything except easy storage, but there are lots of stockmakers that produce aftermarket thumbhole stocks; these examples are for the Remington 870, and are available from http://gun-parts.com/remingtonstocks/

Have a look at Knoxx products. The Compstock in particular is great for what you need. I would not recommend using a thumb hole or pistol grip.

if a thumbhole stock is beating you up that bad, you need to consider tightening up the stock to your shoulder. The Moss. 835 ulti-mag is the most comfortable shotgun ive ever put to my cheek, and accurate beyond my personal ability to control POI of a shotgun round beyond 30 yards or so...

if ANY stock is beating you up bad, then the gun doesn't fit you right...have a good stocker measure you properly and the recoil and pain will practically disappear...

SDC,
I had seen those for the 870, and I now notice the 500 there. That is exactly what I am looking for. All of the recoil should be handled in the shoulder still. The thumb is just in a more natural position than wrapped around the top of a stock.

Yes, I do plan on using it as a rifle. Rifled barrel, scope, sabots. I doubt the smooth bore will ever even have a round down it.

brighamr,
You dont grip and hold the gun using the thumb. You grip and pull it into your shoulder. All kick is passed back through the stock to the very solid shoulder weld you have created. If it was doing bad things to your thumb, pull tighter.

Mkonops,
This isn't about recoil issues. I havn't found a gun yet that hurts so bad I wont shoot it, but more for comfort. I will admit, my mossy put a bruise on me and that isn't easy, but it also wasnt cut down to fit properly at the time.
