I plunked down some coin for a 4 5/8" New Model Black Hawk .45 Colt
and I'm planning to roll up some home mades for it. They are going to be 255 gr. LSWC and later some hand cast lead Lee 452-255-RF flat nose.

The powders I have on hand Unique, 2400,HS6,Bullseye,Win. 296 ,H110. What kind of velocity can I expect out of the short barrel? I'd like a loading where I'm not going to be wasting powder, but still will be stiff enough to do its' deadly deed.

My ears are open to suggestion.

thanks dd

Anybody out there shoot a short barrel Ruger revolver in .45 Colt?

Looking for some input on the velocity range in those short barrels, most of the published load data is for much longer barrels, and what I'm asking is what kind of velocitys I can expect with a 4 5/8".

8.5 to 9.0 grains Unique with a 255 lead bullet will duplicate the old black powder load that made the .45 Colt's reputation as a man & game killer.

It will get 1,000+ in a 7 1/2" barrel, and probably over 900 in your 4 5/8" barrel.

It will kill anything that needs killing in the USA.

Those big slugs don't have to break the sound barrier to shoot clear through most anything on four legs, or two.

If you want even more power then that, there are a lot of heavy loads for the Ruger 4 5/8" Blackhawk at the bottom of this link.

Thanks rc,
Thats probably more than I will ever need and will most likley download to start, had a Black Hawk in .357 Magnum shot some pretty stiff loads in that and really don't enjoy
getting slapped in the face, I know the .45 can be a little hard to handle with some of those Ruger only loads!
