The Dan Wesson Bobtail Commander...
I've heard a lot of talk about the DW being a less made 1911. Feh.

Reliable. Accurate. Well built and using only forged stainless... no MIM or plastic parts. They shoot brilliantly. And it's under a grand. Not a bad option.

Yup, my new one also has that tight of a slide/frame fit.

I was actually thinking of posting the same shot of my new DW but ya beat me to it!

I'm slowly becoming more and more impressed with both the C-Bob and the PM-7 (y'all are really trying to convince the rest of us 1911 guys who don't have DW 1911s yet, aren't you?) ...

... anyone know if DW has any plans to produce some lightweight models?

Yeah, I have a CBOB, and would like a Pointman but for the front serrations. I wonder if they will do a special order without that?

"Keith DW" is a member over at http://forums.1911forum.com/, he can be found in the Dan Wesson manufacurer section of the forum. He is the guy you want to talk to for anything custom, if it can be done and how much it'd cost.

A Couple Downsides

The grip safety is sloppy loose and poorly fit, no cure since the factory hogged off too much metal so even a new EB grip safety will wobble.

Barrel chamber is excessivly relieved removing (IMO) metal needed to safely support the chamber.

Nice guns tho!

"The grip safety is sloppy loose and poorly fit."
Ah, that would be a Negative, sir. Now, it isn't a perfect fit... but it isn't loose and sloppy. The ones I've examined (about a dozen or so) have been very nice. There isn't a thing loose and sloppy on these guns. You must have seen a poor example.

But George!-

Your own picture shows a poorly fit grip safety!

Over on one of the 1911 forums there is a thread that the DW rep participates in that details the oversized factory cut beween the frame ears.

We sell the DW CBOB in .45acp as well as the 10mm faily regularly, it's a good value gun as long as one isn't familiar with the high end customs.

A note on MIM for you George-

From Dave Severns:

STI" thumb safety, currently used on all Dan Wessons, is a high quality, MIM part.

I apologize. I did not intend to mislead anyone. I thought I was correct.

Well, how about only 1 MIM part?!?

Thanks cedjunior!

Thats pretty tight, but theres still room for that piece of hair, under the right side frame rail:p:D

looks just like the 10mm CBOB i just bought to keep my RZ10 company in the safe....they have requested that i move those ugly glocks to another shelf

I've never heard that. If anything, the opposite. I owned a pre-CZ Patriot for a few years and it was stellar. If I ever buy a Commander type, it will be the DW.

This isn't just a tight slide to frame fit - it's an almost perfect frame to slide fit. Most of what you see in that photo - the dark line outlining the rails... that's oil. We've shot hundreds of rounds through one and it has not jammed. Argue that all you want, but the guns run just fine. And no, it's not a sloppy loose grip safety... there is nothing lose on the gun.
I find it amazing that DW can do this and these guns retail for 999. That's about a Grand Less than other makers who put out nice guns, but will less attention to detail.
The other thing I like about it... there is no huge billboard roll marks on the slide... it's clean. It's just about the most flawless production 1911 out there.
And this isn't just one unique example. I've handled a bunch of them and they were all like this one I snapped the photo of. Very consistent quality from what I'm seeing. These things are fantastic for the money.

Agree 100% with you there!

My only wish is that it also came in plain carbon steel.

The only adjustments I made to mine (and I love tinkering with my M1911s), was to change the grips and tightened the trigger slack a bit with 2 turns of an allen wrench.

It really is an near perfect out of box gun.

Well, if you guys want one, I'm doing another group buy on these now. See my sig line.
