Does any manufacturer make a bobtailed, commander-sized 1911 for under $1,000?

I really wanted a Dan Wesson CBOB, but it appears DW discontinued them except to California. By the time I've saved enough, they might be gone all together or priced too high.

I loved basically all of the CBOB's features. Any ideas on something comparable? Is it CBOB or bust?

Dan Wesson makes the only bobtailed commander for around $1K that i know of. people who want a cbob should look hard in the coming months because like you said they have been discontinued as of 2010.

i believe used DW CBOBs may rise in price due to increased demand and a loss of new supply. its really too bad they have been discontinued... what a popular pistol!

I believe while the CBOB will be discontinued, DW will still have a "bobtail" pistol based on the Valor.

I chased this same question down hard...

the last COBs in .45 to be had for under $1K were sold in late Dec.

They're only going to make a very limited number of CBOBs in 2010 and they will only be going to dealers in CA.... at a substantially higher price.

I found one in 10mm the first week of Jan., but really wanted .45 acp.

Decided to go with a NRM Colt Commander in stainless (not an XSE), which I bought for $740 nib and after getting aquaited, I'll decide whether of not to get it bobbed.

The CBOB train has departed.... CZ-USA has blown it

Talk to Bob at Fusion ... he's the genius behind the Dan Wesson revival. But the same gun will cost you ~$1,400

yep. and at a higher price too, thus putting it at least a couple hundred above the OP's price point.

my recommendation...if you know you want it, and the window is closing, find it and pay with a credit card. however, this advice is tempered by my belief that some folks should never, ever use a credit card. too many folks don't seem to understand the importance of paying their debts and paying them on time (or early!), and that is a big part of what's gotten our country into the mess it's in now.

so...tell me your credit score, and i'll tell you if you should do this. (kidding...kind of)

as an aside...i love my CBOB, and i'm very glad i got it when i did based on DW's plans for 2010.

Here you go. S&W 1911sc, bobtailed by Jess Gypin at OnTarget Custom gun works.

After obsessing about the Dan Wesson CBOB for 1.5 years, I finally had the money AND found one last week. It was in a local DFW gun shop for $900 out-the-door with two Novak mags... It was "used", but in pristine condition. I was more than glad with the price tag!

Just yesterday, I found ANOTHER CBOB here in Dallas.... NEW for ~$1200 (not including tax) and this place wont budge on price!!!!!

Ya know, you can order a bobtail mainspring housing for about $50 ... not sure what a gunsmith would charge to install it, but it is possible to convert most any 1911 into a bobtail.

Here's a thread on another forum showing what all is involved.

EDIT: looks like Gemini Customs does the conversion for $145

You might could even find someone who has done it themselves to let you borrow the jig, and do your own if you want to save the money. I wouldn't do it unless you are pretty good at working metal and own a good drill press already though. If you have the tools and the know-how, it doesn't look like a hard job, but without either of those, it would be money well spent to take it to a smith.

Ihave a friend who has a Colt Commander SS that has been bob tailed . It nice Its not as tight as my Dan Wesson but I wouldn't turn it down as a carry pistol. But a new Commander and have it done should be about a grand

Thanks for the suggestions. I have neither the tools nor the talent to make the conversion myself, but I could pay a smith to do it for me.

I'll wait a little while and maybe I'll get lucky. If not, I'll just go the smith route.
