I buddy is buying a Tikka in .308 (T2? T3?, not sure) in stainless steel, synthetic stock. I only had about 45 seconds to handle it (really nice trigger!) but I am curious about what rings he will need. The receiver has what appears to be nice grooves atop it for scope rings, but they don't look deep enough or tall enough to be weaver-type. Can anybody shed a little light here?

Thanks.

It's drilled and tapped as well. You can attach any scope base/rings you want just like any other rifle.

The groove is there for Tikka factory rings that come with the rifle when you buy it new.

It comes with rings that are as good as anything you'll buy aftermarket. I would suggest replacing all the screws in the factory mounts. I found them to be a little soft. I spent less than $3 at Home Depot for hardened steel screws that were not only harder steel, but had deeper openings for the hex wrenches to get a good bite.

I'd go that way and save the $50 you would spend on other mounts and use it on ammo or a better scope.

If you absolutely must spend some money I'd buy nothing but Talley Lighweights. They are the only mounts I'll use anymore.

IMO don't use the rings that come with the Tikka. With the 308 recoil I would go with the Sako Opilock mounts and rings. I have 8 Sako rifles all with the Optilocks and they are rock solid. Nothing wrong with the Talley's either.

Why not.

They come with a stud that fits into a hole in the top of the receiver. They aren't going anywhere, from the recoil of any caliber. The screws are a little soft, but that problem can be fixed for around $3. The Talleys look a little nicer and are my first pick on any other rifle, but functionally nothing works any better than the factroy Tikka mounts. If you had a nice fancy rifle I could see spending some money for nicer looking mounts, but the Tikka is a workhorse rifle, not a show horse and the factory mounts work as well as any.

Lots of people have had luck with the factory rings. Warne also makes good rings.

the factory rings might get the job done just fine, but saying that there aren't any better aftermarket options is quite bold.

i have a DNZ mount on my T3 in .270. excellent mounts.
