Time for some honesty!

I'm not understanding OP's point. Unless I need to pocket carry due to what I'm wearing at work, I usually carry a double stack 9, a M&P 2.0 or CZ. Is he saying this is wrong and I should switch to a 22?

No, he's just saying what he likes to carry because it fits his hand and carry attire the best. I think the whole thread is sort of a tongue-in-cheek thing, anyway... I'm kind of surprised some of you folks are getting so uptight about it. I admitted I used to carry a Jennings .22... besides the NA .22 revolver, that's probably the worst pistol mentioned in this thread, I figured I would get called out on it somewhere... :D

I always scratch my head about people asking about carry pieces. Finding a pistol that you can carry comfortably, that you can draw and present positively, and that you can fairly hit what you are aiming at isn't a question about what's most popular (and I'm not saying that is the subject of this thread,) but going out and handling and shooting as many likely candidates as you can get your hands on. My carry love... the CW9... may be the best thing evarrrr for me (and, I think, someone else here, too...) but it may be Kryptonite to someone else, much like a J-frame Smith is to me. I would no more criticize what someone chooses to carry than make fun of what they eat for dinner... to each his own, and I'm glad as long as you are carrying something, and that you are eating dinner.

Depending on where I "hope" I know what my environment will be, I carry (owb) either an officer - sized 1911 or a 5". Warm weather will be a t-shirt or sport shirt. Cold weather will be a jacket. Don't care if it "prints". In my rural area where you have the normal batch of mom/pop stores, feed/hardware stores, cafes, etc, I sometimes open carry.

I risk my life every time I get in my truck, climb on the roof of my house, go fishing in the boat, go to bed with the wood stove burning, drive a 4 wheeler, use a chainsaw to cut down a tree, go ice fishing, strap myself in my drag car, go camping, or walk down a flight of stairs. Life is full of risk management and I concluded a long time ago the least likely way for me to die is by someone shooting me, so I might as well live my life without something jabbing me in the side all day. When I go somewhere where that risk goes up I put the lc9s in my pocket.

Convenient that you go where there is increased risk, rather than it being able to come you.

I think this is a red herring argument. He's not betting his life on a .22 LR, he's betting that his life will not be in any danger that would be avoidable with a bigger or more powerful gun. Since it is overwhelmingly likely that he will not need any gun- and if he does, it's likely that he won't need to shoot it- and if he does, it's reasonably likely that it doesn't matter which caliber he shoots- he's not really at any significantly greater risk than anyone else.

That being said, I haven't really had a problem carrying a 9mm up through the size of a Glock 17.

Carrying a 22lr in case a lethal threat incident happens, is betting life on a .22

People don't think it be like that but it do. ;)

Don't kid yourself, there's crime and violence up there near Brainerd, too. A childhood friend of mine is a psychologist for the State in Brainerd, he knows and treats some of the perps. there's meth, gangs, and such there just like in the Cities, just on a smaller scale.

If I'm shot to death by a gang of meth dealers at Fleet Farm please send a balloon saying "I told you so" to my funeral. I protect my home, not worried about going to town in the middle of the day.

I like my 21A, and almost want to carry it. But, if I was going to go down to a gun that small for its size, it would still make more sense to carry my P32 instead. In fact, I already do, in a front pocket, as a backup to a belt-carried subcompact 9mm by the same maker.

If I didn't have the P32 already....

I fully understand where the OP is coming from. In my earlier years, before concealed carry was so common, I carried a Beretta 21 in .25ACP in an ankle holster daily. Now we have a lot more options in guns and holsters so the Beretta is retired to the back of the safe. I did just buy a Remington RM.380 that is roughly the same size as the old Beretta but I have not checked it out enough yet to begin carrying it yet. My always with me gun for the last few years has been the Kahr CM9, it's light enough to always carry and small enough to always hide while being in a caliber that is much better than the .25ACP was. I do carry a .45 Kimber sometimes but it gets heavy by the end of the day and I find myself glad to take it off in the evening.

I don't see anything about ones feelings yet, whether they feel protected by whatever minimal caliber.
When minimal caliber feels sufficient for close to home, but not other places, that is some upper level rationalization.
"Yea here in SleepyTown a lethal threat will run away if the anemic attacker sees a gun, but in MethTown he be tougher, need better gun"

Muh feels
is important factor in the outcome of life / death event. ;)

Feeling sufficiently protected riding in a Smart Car in case of collision with large SUV or full size truck, feelings matter - amiright.
And when Smart Car owner is not involved in a collision they can post about how they made it home safe again - obvious analogy

It appears the bad guys didn't get the memo about Fleet Farm stores being a no crime zone.....

I get the feeling that those who decide not to protect their family or themselves when out in public by not exercising their right to carry probably can not obtain a carry permit where they live.

Well, if you want to think like that. Seems like a pretty safe bet, though. Beats Vegas odds.

I know, I saw Fargo;)
I carry a Steyr S9 in a leather OWB holster and a spare mag almost always. It carries well, conceals adequately enough for me and I can shoot it quickly, accurately and comfortably.

SOOOOO... I guess that's your accomplice in the wood chipper, then?

I have to ask, where were they shot? I imagine they weren’t shot in the face, heart or groin. If they were, they’re a lot tougher than me! A .22 to the face would require more than a band aid, and I hope the Doc would remove it.

The problem with the 22 L.R. is it lacks enough strength to break bones.

The human head is actually well armored. It's round shape helps to deflect blows. Thus low powered rounds like 22 L.R. and 25 ACP slid along the skull rather than penetrating it.

The face isn't as vital as it may seem. Shooting your attacker in one of eyes would seem effective to stopping the attack. Shots to the sinus cavities and mouth not so much.

The heart is protected by the rib cage. Again the 22 L.R. lacks the power to break the rib and again slides along it failing to penetrate deeply. If the round gets pass the rib and into the body it certainly can be lethal but I am talking about reliably causing the person to stop his attack immediately.

To compound the problem the O.P. is using a short barrel pistol which means even more reduced velocity.

As for the groin if you can shoot your attackers balls off you are a much more talented shooter than I am and my hat is off to you.

I admit it...I carry a woefully underpowered 13 ounce 357 mag with a barrel too short to kill a fly.

I wish I could say I carry a mans gun like a 454 casull or a 500 magnum, but alas, they just dont fit in my pocket. So I just live with the fact that every day is a roll of the dice.

I rarely carry anymore but if I do it is usually a tiny DB 380. It fits my hand, fits in a pocket, and I can hit extremely well with it. I have a DB-9 which is a good pocket pistol but It isn't as fun or accurate.

Uh, what?

That's essentially saying that everyone who can get a carry permit where they live have decided to exercise their right to carry, and that's simply not true.

Required to carry a Glock 19 at work 40+ hours a week...hide a Smith and Wesson J Frame as well.
On my own time I often carry a little Glock 43 or a 26 these days.

In my younger years I carried a Colt Government Model or a Combat Commander off duty all the time.

Age has got me carrying lighter options in my off time.

A quick walk with my dog down to the mailbox I might even just slide a PM9 or a J Frame in my pocket sometimes.

In the City where I work...always a Glock 19 with at least two reloads.

Over the years , working as a Homicide Investigator, I gained an understanding and appreciation of the value of shot placement.

I also developed a fondness for the ballistics of the 357 and 45 as defensive rounds. And while I understand 9mm ballistics and effectiveness..........I just never feel........comfortable when I carry one.

That said, in the miserable heat and humidity of NC, my most carried gun is my little 9mm S&W CS9. Accurate as any full size pistol, reliable as death and taxes and a joy to carry. I keep it stoked with Winchester RA9b and feel well armed.........well....well enough armed anyways. ;)

There, I feel better now. :)

From my limited experience with a friend's CS9 I second your opinion - as much as I dislike ultra-compact pistols in "serious" calibers, that little gun left me pleasantly surprised. Boringly reliable and quite shootable, with all the controls at the right places for such small firearm.

This thread is a little whacked out. I will be honest but I wont attempt to tell anyone else what to carry. I choose not to carry a caliber smaller than 9mm. I honestly prefer .40 or .45 in a larger gun but I choose 9mm when carrying a smaller gun because I am willing to give up the advantages I believe those rounds offer for reduced recoil. I wind up carrying 9mm often enough. My smallest pistol is a Kahr CM9, the next larger is a cheapo Taurus PT 111 G2. The Taurus is not my nicest pistol but it works. I prefer to carry my old XD-40 when possible but what I carry is governed by what I am wearing & what activities I will be involved in. The largest I carry is a SR 1911 but it is not often I am dressed to conceal it. I honestly prefer to carry the largest pistol I can conceal. My reason is because it is easier to shoot larger pistols accurately, they absorb recoil better. I know it is unlikely that I will actually have to use a gun to defend myself or others but if I have to I want to use the best tool at my disposal. I honestly want to get a compact (G23 size, really interested in the M&P 2.0 .40 compact right now) in .40 & will probably ditch some of the others (the Taurus & the XD) if I do.

I sit behind a computer all day when I am not in meetings. We are a tucked in shirt company. For me a pocket gun is a must.

I have the tiny little NAA .22lr revolver... I never carry it. It is too small for my hands. In the summer I do carry its big brother a NAA .22mag. It is easy to carry and very concealable. The grip on the .22mag is big enough that I can get a good grip on the little revolver.

Lately my ultra-light pocket pistol has been a Kel Tec P32. The NAA .22mag revolver is a bit smaller to carry but I am pretty partial to the P32. My LCP is a bit wider and a touch heavier than my P32 so I only carry the LCP when I wear pants with larger pockets.

When I am out and about in the city I usually have my Kah CM9 on me. If I am going someplace in a more dodgy neighborhood I will usually carry my XDS 3.3" .45 with the NA .22 mag or P32 in my pocket.

Nice gun. Can you get grips for them now? Mine would grab my shirt all the time. Dam rubbery grips. Never could find any good grips for it. Had to let it go.
