I am testing Titegroup @4.2gr with 115gr FMJRN bullet. I am using a CZ SP01 or 85C. I have kept my OAL at 1.145 range. And I have tested in the barrel of the guns. What am I missing by not conforming to the listed OAL that are posted? I have shot at least 500 rounds at OAL of 1.50 with Power Pistol and had no problems also. Yes I am new to reloading.

.005 is not much, but you are changing powders, so that's a big deal.

Start low and work up. (Slowly with Titegroup) Check the OAL the data you are using has and adjust down from the max charge if you are loading shorter.

I use a lot of titegroup and load a lot of 9mm.
Titegroup is unforgiving of overloads and high pressures.

Other than that its a great powder.

I would personally load as long an OAL as will fit in the mag and cycle reliably in your gun. 1.145 is somewhat long. I like 1.125 with my 125 grs. 1.145 if it fits should be fine.

I load 4.2-4.4 of Titegroup and a 125-gr LRN.

Titegroup 9mm OAL

I started loading with a higher OAL and have had zero feeding problems (500+) rounds in the CZ pistols. I started with PP and wanted to save some $ so thought about moving to Titegroup.

What am I missing by not conforming to the listed OAL that are posted?

John -
Welcome to reloading and THR !!

► The published OALs are simply what the cartridge was tested at, not any kind of absolute rule. So read the manuals as being a lab report, not so much an exact recipe. That makes the published OAL the minimum length you should use with that load. You can always go longer as your needs dictate... out to the SAAMI max of 1.169" at which point they will no longer fit the magazine.

► The effect of a published load is that the a) weight/type bullet, b) powder load, and c) OAL all work together to become a recipe. Sort of like telling the doctor your age, weight and height. All 3 go together. A load without an OAL is useless, just as much as a bullet and OAL without the load info would be. So you need all 3 parts of the equation. Conversely, you need to quote all 3 components of the recipe when seeking assistance. This because there are many, many, many TiteGroup recipes out there.

► If allowed by the recipe you're using, you are right to use an OAL in that general area. 1) Because you have a CZ with a tite-ish chamber. 2) Because 115gr is simply a short bullet and you need a shorter OAL to let the case properly grip the bullet. In fact, if the recipe allows, I might even shorten it up to 1.120" to improve the grip. For more info on this you might do better on the CZ Forum at... http://www.czfirearms.us/

Hope this helps!

Assuming you mean 1.145" vs. 1.150"? OP listed 1.5" loads w/ Power Pistol.

Listed OAL are guidelines and can vary gun gun and bullet profile. The shorter the OAL (reducing case volume) the higher pressure with same powder. And, with a lower volume case like 9mm especially so. However .005" is not that much and I can get that spread from my progressive. Unless running very top end loads (which 4.2gr w/ 115gr FMJ is not) you'll be fine.

All,

I have just completed setting up my first press, a Hornady LNL AP Ammo Plant, complete with case feeder and bullet feeder. Dies setup as follows:
Station 1- RCBS size and deprimer
Station 2- Hornady PTX Expander/powder drop
Station 3- Hornady Powder COP
Station 4- Hornady Bullet Feeder Die
Station 5- Hornady Seater Die

I am only interested in loading 9mm for now for plinking and training purposes. Below is the current recipe that I am looking at using. Can you all please take a look at it and tell me if you consider this a safe load or not. It will be fired out of a Glock 19.

Bullet: Rainer 115gr RN
Primer: Remington 1.5 Small Pistol
Powder: Titegroup 4.2 grains
Case: Remington
COAL: 1.100"

Thanks in advanced for all your thoughts and opinions.

If you would like to email me, it is my user name @ gmail, also if there is anyone in the Chesterfield, Va area that would be willing to give me some classes it would be greatly appreciated.

@jlm83082 - nice press set up, I have the LNL without the bullet and case feeders. I'd suggest a STARTING powder charge for that bullet at 4.0 grains TG and a longer COL. There isn't any reason to go shorter than about 1.14" COL, that's about as short as you'll find for store-bought 115 grain RN. I have a feeling that if you loaded them down to 1.10, the top of the case would be above the main body of the bullet, not where you want to be. Once you've satisfied yourself that the 4.0 grains works OK for you, you can slowly move up, would not go above 4.2 grains.
