I have a basic question that some of you might know from your own experiences. I bought a Mosin Nagant several years ago and i finally sporterized it. I boiled all the cosmoline off and dropped it in a monte carlo droop in stock. I had the barrel cut off just about two inches to get rid of the front sight. From their i removed the rear sight and had a picatinny rail drilled and tapped on to cover where the rear sight was. I put a red dot on it and tinkered with it.

I am now wanting to mount a cheap forward mounted scout type site to the gun and shoot it as a brush type hunting gun. But I think the barrel is to long to make it very maneuverable in the brush. Currently the barrel is 26.5 inches long and the gun is 47 inches long total.

What is everyone,s thoughts on cutting it off more????? Should I cut it?? How short?? Will it ruin the rifle?? I dont want a sniper rigg. Just a good brush gun that is accurate out to 200 yards at the most.

A shorter barrel won't affect accuracy, all else being equal. The most important part of the entire rifle is the muzzle crown, though. If you mess that up, it won't shoot straight until it gets fixed.

The main problem is that a Mosin will get loud if you shorten the barrel too much.

Your not gonna hurt a thing by cutting it down to 20"-22", especially if your limit is 2-300yrds. Not knowing how much barrel is passed the end of your stock, I can't say how it would look, however.:)

:( its already chopped up so cutting it further wont hurt but to be warned the shorter the barrel and lighter the stock the more kick your getting and the more fire coming out the end
