Has anyone ever owned or shot the current line of Auto Ordinance Tommy Guns? I was kind of thinking that it would be fun to have one of these just for fun. How do the Auto Ordinance Tommy Guns perform in terms of quality?

Don't know about the "Tommy Gun" per se, but I have an AR-15 with a .45 ACP (Olympic Arms) upper that is a fun plinker, and pretty accurate out to 100 yards or so with open sights. It makes a nice camp carbine.

Came real close.

Within the last few months I did VERY serious research and came REAL close to buying a 1927A1 deluxe model (ignore logic, work off emotions), new for $879 a fair price. Money wasn't the issue just reliability and quality. Held the M1A model and the Deluxe model and did a great deal of listening. After 2-3 months of decision making I wisely opted not to buy either model, but purchased a Commando Arms 45 instead. Up close the quality just isn't there and they are suppose to make a better "tommy" than Kahr does! If you don't have to hold it and just admire it hanging on the wall they are great but in truth they are a HEAVY modern day dinosaur that has quality control issues (yes, even Auto Ordinance). The Commando Arms 45 is much lighter and feeds lead bullet reloads (RN & SWC) without a hitch and is accurate out to 75 meters :what: Bullet drop is a problem with the .45 ACP through.:D

I have casually considered it, but if I were to buy one, it would have to be a full-auto original model, which is just way too much money. Wonder if you can still get drum magazines for the new semi-auto ones?

Yeah, actually you can get drums but they are limited to 10 rounds capacity..... :cuss:

I am still looking for info or pics of the Commando Arms 45. If it is a Tommy Gun clone I will seriously look into that as my Tommy Gun.

Commando Arms, Inc (was Volunteer Arms, changed in '78 I think). No website that I can find....sounds like it'd be tough to get one.

Yea, its a look-a-like "tommy" that they quit making around '78. I did a great deal of research on the Commando also before buying. They turn-up at the gunshows every once in awhile and go for around $400. I just saw one with the verticle handgrip at the PA show going for $420. Workmanship is on a par with a Marlin 45 camp carbine. Lots of stampings and plastic (like a Glock) but at least mine feeds everything but empty cases (but I have not tried them yet:D ) They aren't machined like the Auto Ordinance but they don't weigh 12 lbs either. Let me post a pic if the Administrator will allow. Do a search here on Commando Arms to read my previous opinions. Good Luck

My Dad has one. They're a ton of fun. He shoots mostly LRN bullets, and it seems to be reliable...

And you can get older "pre-ban" drum mags, but they cost more than the gun...

if any of y'all are lookin' for a Commando Arms, I've seen the receiver of one up in the back of the shop at Randy's Guns and Knives in Knoxville. It was chucked in a box high on a shelf, so I'm presuming it ain't a customer repair job nor officially available for sale.

I'd bet that should the rest of the parts be scattered around the shop somewhere, they might be willing to sell the thing. :)

A gunshop by my house has one of these for rent. I havent tried it myself but, ive seen other guys play with it. It looked like a lot of fun and didnt seem to have any major failures. I can say that it certainly LOOKS fabulous though. Oh yeah and it ejects brass about 10 feet in the air too. And for some reason the guys who rent it always want to set up in the left-most lane
