Hey!

First chance to use the internet since my outing yesterday. Yesterday, I took my co-worker, Jimmy, out to the Mt. Hood National Forest to shoot for the first time. He's a little bit younger than me (21), and is starting to express interest in guns after having a collector car stolen, the replacement being scooped out by the neighborhood thugs, and moving into a new house.

It was my day off, and he took a day off, and we drove about 45 miles from downtown Portland, with everything I own. We stopped at the Fred Meyers and bought a number of large pumpkins and cases of cheap soda.

We started off with a Ruger 10/22 and a Ruger Mk. III (22/45), and that's mostly what we shot all day (1,000 rounds of .22LR). We also shot my .30-30 Marlin, my Marlin .22Mag, and my H&R single-shot 20 gauge. Some other fellows out there, upon learning that it was his first time, let him shoot a full AR mag, and .40 (M&P) and .45 caliber (don't remember the make) pistols.

It was my first time teaching someone to shoot and I was a bit nervous. When we got out, we layed everything out on a table, then sat on the tailgate of my truck and went over the four rules. Jimmy was a great student, respectful, curious about mechanical stuff, legal stuff, and political stuff, and we had a blast.

I barter labor for massage, and this morning, after my massage therapist commented that my right shoulder and upper back were tighter than usual, I explained to her what I had been up to. Now she wants to go! My little brother's coming to visit in January (another first-timer), and if this keeps up, maybe my girlfriend will want to try it.

Anyway, it was a blast. It felt good to introduce another person to this lovely thing we are a part of.

P.S. On the way back into town, we stopped at a gun shop, and he got his heart set on one of these for his first. (http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?id=129&category=Pistol)

Well done, keep them coming... I got my neighbor to go this weekend, we'll see how that one goes... I let you guys know

Taking a newbie to the range is fun. I had an experience with one as well. I met an old lawyer friend for lunch to discuss a potential legal issue. Over lunch he mentioned he was making a life change and facing some of his fears. One was guns (another I remember was riding a roller coaster). We talked at length and I slowly introduced guns into the conversation. After lunch we went to the range where I am a member and we shot pistols. I think it was his first time. From there we went to Classic Arms where he bought a Beretta pistol (not sure the model). Anyway, he went from anti to gun owner that same afternoon. Kinda cool.

I like the taurus but a Patton would say "pearl grips are for a pimp in a New Orleans [brothel].

Wowza, that Taurus is a sweet-looking pistol. Not sure I'd want to shoot it. In any case, not a bad choice for a first gun, though I'm a revolver guy myself.

Nice job joshk-k. I took a newbie couple out this weekend also. They did real well and said they had fun. I want to take some really smokin-hot, single chicks out shooting. Guns and smoking-hot chicks; what more could a straight male ask for?

Well done!

Everyone we can teach to shoot is another person the anti's lies won't work on.

"What caliber did you use to take him out? "
That's pretty funny!

I bet that right after Halloween, you'll be able to get pumpkins for super cheap. They're a lot of fun to bang away at.

I took a guy from work who just turned 21 to the range for his first time ever shooting a gun last week. We also rented a ruger .22 and he really enjoyed it. I rented a 1911 to see what all the fuss was about and wow, what a nice gun:) We plan on going back, but next time we're going to take a few more people from work who have never shot. Whoever converts the most anti's/gun neutrals, wins :)
