Well yesterday was "take a South African shooting" day. My new friend John is here from SA and we went out ot the desert for a bit of fun. Bit of background info. In SA they have what I would call extreme gun control. You must get a permit for each gun and a permit to buy ammo and they also have some type of general license which must be renewed every 2-3 years and the bad news is they arent renewing them. John owns a .22-410 combo type rifle, an SMLE a Star 9mm and a 22 of some sort. He isnt used to shooting mass quantities of ammo (He was shocked by the fact that we brought approx 4-5K of ammo with us) so we did our best to give him a day he would not forget. First up were revolvers, Colts, Smiths, in .38 .357 .44mag Then we did autos HK's, Glock's, Springfield & Colt in 9mm .40 .45 Next up were shotguns Benelli M3, Remington 870, Mossberg 590 all in 12 ga Then switched to rifles. M1A's Fullsize, Scout and SoCom and then a FAB-10 Last up was the Serbu BFG .50 cal. John was a little "shell shocked" by the time we were done but he said it was the type of day he had always dreamed about. We take for granted our freedoms here and I was constantly reminded of that while discussing SA gun laws with John.

Ya know, as much as folks tend to bad-mouth California, there is no "going out to the desert" here in MI. :(

Places to just go and have fun shooting are few and far between.

Glad you folks had fun. You'd have had to dress alot warmer to have that kind of fun here in the mid-west.:p

An unforgettable day for him I'd say.

It is more than a little worrying with what they are trying to do with gun ownership in SA - things are bad enough, without that added in.

It's all part of the ANC's communist agenda. Nothing new or surprising, really. Stalin and Hitler followed the same pattern. Promise a chicken in every pot, find some scapegoats for all society's problems, and make sure to disarm the peons.

Yup.
I would not be surprised if South Africa resembles Zimbabwe in the near future.

Out of curiosity Psssniper, did John serve any time in the S.A. military? They did after all have conscription there prior to the ANC gaining control.

I'll ask about his military experience and report back,
Heres another shot I took that is kinda cool:D

It's pretty apparent what the SA government is after with their gun control.

The heritage of the Afrikaaners was based on self-sufficiency and ability to defend themselves. You limit their ability to do that and they'll be history. They'll be overwhelmed by the locals in no time. It's gonna happen.
