My 6 y/o son visited from Maine over the Christmas/New Years holidays. That's the big reason I haven't been online much the past 2 weeks. I had an absolutely wonderful time with him, and he really enjoyed his visit also.

The highlight of the trip for me was getting the chance to take him shooting for the first time. Before we went, I spent some time going over the 4 rules (he can recite them now), gun safety, sight picture, and basic gun handling. He was a rapt pupil and took quite an interest to the subject.

After ensuring he understood the rules, I took him to the Cheatham County range for a couple hours on the Sunday after Christmas. The weather was great, about 65 degrees and sunny. We took his Keystone Arms Cricket .22, my AR-7, SAR-1, M44, S&W 686, Lorcin .22, Mossberg 500 and my fiance's Taurus 85.

I started Justyn out on the Cricket, and he loved it. It's a very short and lightwieght rifle, but still proved a bit too much for him to wield well. I had to help hold it up a bit and sight it, but he pulled the trigger. He did remarkably well. Eventually, I took over and held it as well as sighting it, but he verified the sight picture and pulled the trigger. I'd love to say he hit 100%, but he did do well enough. I'm so proud! :D

He also enjoyed pulling the triggers of my SAR and M44, with me holding them and sighting. He didn't try the handguns this time, but eventually. He was also thrilled when I blasted a 75 round drum thru the SAR as fast as I could. He's a boy after my own heart. The 12 gauge also brought forth a smile.

Unfortunately, I don't own a decent digital camera, so no pics yet. We did take some with a regular camera. When those pics get developed, I'll order a CD so I can post pics.

Wanna make a 6 year old sit still? Give him a .22 and put a tin can downrange

:) Sounds like you're having fun :)

I was a bit older...but it seems like yesterday when I first went shooting (hunting actually) with my dad...and that was about 1967. I'm sure that he will remember his experience as well. I hope you have many, many more opportunites to repeat it.

Skunk-haha very true. Maybe when I have kids I'll have to do that. :D

Sounds like it was profitable and fun. Keep on training him he can never get enough. Good job with getting him started now before too many people tell him guns are bad.
