Took The Model 43 to the Range (218 Bee)

I went to the range today with the Model 43 to see how the 218 Bee would do today on factory ammo. I didn’t get a chance to get some 40 gr of 46 gr bullets so I fell on my backup, 16 rounds of factory ammo. Before I could get to the Model 43 I had to sight in a new scope for the 10/22 ( thank you Bushnell) and I tested the Accu-Strut on my Mini 14 (which worked like a champ).

The weather was supposed to be in the 80s but I don’t think it got into the 70s with a 15 mph wind south to southeast for the rest of the day.

I set up on the 100 yard range using a pink rug someone left for me. I was shooting off of my adjustable barrel rest set on the forend of the stock.

If you refer to the target below you can see how the rounds hit the target.

1. First shot was a fouling shot.

2. Second shot hit a 4 o'clock on the outer edge of the orange ring.

3. The third shot was about 1/2 inch from the black diamond again about 4 o'clock.

4. The fourth shot was right above shot 3.

5. The fifth shot was at 3 o'clock an inch from the black diamond.

I was planning to stop there but I had to try one more shot but it was a flyer at 2 inches from the black diamond.

By then I was getting low on ammo and I still needed to run some hand loads through my PSS so I wrapped up any more testing for this session.

218 bee

I am glad some one else is shooting a 218 bee. I bought mine in 1963 used it had a old K6 weaver on it. this was my first CF rifle. The rifle now wears and old 6-18x40 Redfield I have shot it and carried it maney miles, it is like an old friend. A box of shells in 1963 were $ 4.25 for a box of 50. I bought Win 46gr hp`s mostley Rem were same price but had a 45gr hp`s. But I thought I was in tall cotten and shot a truck load of jackrabbits, pd`s, groundhogs, and a few coyotes with it. A box of shells cost close to $ 90.00 now. I have reload for this rifle as soon as I had enought brass. I had just about retired my 218 Bee because my brass in really get old , and we bought 2 new CZ 22 Hornets that shoot like a house a fire. But I found 4 bags of 218 brass at ab estate sale I just happend to see them in a box in a shed in the back yard, one bag had and old sticker still on for $ 3.50. Bought all 4 unopened Win bags of a 100 peices each, last day of the sale and the cashier said he would take $ 10.00. I am back to shooting my 218 Bee again but I am using thoes 35gr V-MAX`S from Hornady we use that bullet in our 22 Horrnets. My 218 Bee shoots better than it ever did with thoes bullets. I am still using IMR 4227 though, I may try some H-110 I don`t know yet. I took it for a walk the other afternoon and the geese were making a lot of noise over on the river, it was a coyote bothering them he never knew I was there, the shot was less than 80 yrds and he fell DRT never moved but the dog was real sick had Mange about as bad as I ever seen a coyote have, did him a favor. Never touched him had to leave him lay. Well I have bent your ear long enough, when you get old and fat you are just in the way, and all you have left are your stories. Ain't it a kick shooting these "classic" rifles and calibers? Good for you and I too am glad to hear I'm not alone out there.

There are some more 218 Bee shooters on the High road that have yet to check in. It's amazing that that there are still people working on loads for the Bee. I think I'll try to load up some rounds using 35gr V-MAX bullets, they sound to be the way to go.
